The Mark Twain Lake is man-made lake here in Northeast Missouri. It is about 20 miles southwest of Hannibal. It was created by the Clarence Cannon Dam impounding the Salt River.
We have had record flooding and rain in this area this year. Right now the Mark Twain Lake is at record levels and they've opened the Dam to release some of the water. They are trying to bring the lake down about a half a foot a day. To achieve this, they are currently releasing 60,000 cubic feet of water a second. A SECOND!! The Corps of Engineers woman said that if we get more rainfall they may have to open it up to 78,000 cubic feet a second.
The Salt River valley is being flooded due to the release of water. The residents in the area were warned ahead of time, and several of the area campgrounds are closed.

We've been in the area now for 14 years. In that time they've never opened the Dam to this extreme.

The roar of the water is incredible.

The Lake side of the bridge was closed to pedestrians because of the high water level and debris. The water on that side is close to coming over the top.

That's a tree branch, not a person.
Thanks for coming with me on my trip out to the Mark Twain Lake and Dam.

I like how you've not only written about what's going on but also shown photos so that it becomes more real.
I live in the Western part of IL and have seen stuff similar to what you've posted on the news but I like your version better because it makes it seem less common like the news makes it seem like this sort of thing happens almost regularly and I know it doesn't not in this part of the U.S.A.
Thanks for posting this.
whhwwooooossssshhhhh... wonderful photos... Blessings...
