Valentine's Day, is largely considered throughout the world as the feast of love and lovers send cards and give flowers to their sweet heart. About Valentine's Day origins, we know almost nothing: people commonly assume that its origins lie in Lupercalia that are annual Roman celebrations observed in honor of Lupercus, the god of herds and fields (celebrations of purification, resurrection and fertility), that happened around mid-February. It is also commonly said that Prince Charles of Orleans sent love letters on February 14th to Mary of Cleves when he was prisoner in England. Another belief is that with the Spring approaching, birds begin to mate on February 14th.
It is a fact that Valentine has been recognized for centuries and there is a medieval tag that says:
"Bleeding of Valentine's Day
Makes blood clear night and day
And bleeding the day before
Preserves from fever all year long"
The most popular as well as the simplest Valentine gifts is a greeting card that we generally send to our sweet heart or close relatives and our friends.
Romantic Tip:
Package your Valentines card in a big envelope and send it to Loveland, Colorado. Your Valentines card will be stamped by Loveland volunteers and re-sent from Loveland to your sweet heart.
In the Middle Ages, love did not have the same meaning than in the 21st century: Eleanor of Aquitaine, Queen of France and England (by the anger of God) would confirm it. She organized a Court of Love that had strict laws and love meant much more than we think: a lover was a squire of dames, love was pure and non-physical, we could not act inappropriately. A squire of dames was a friend and the court was dedication. Because of this Valentine is one of the most special days of the year for many people as is not a only a celebration for lovers to celebrate their sentiments any more. Not having a significant other on Valentine does not prevent you to observe Valentine's Day and you might be spending February 14th with your close relatives and/or friends instead of your sweet heart.
