When a person is on diet, eating out can be a big challenge!
He/she sometimes loses control and tends to overeat as the result of the very strict diet rule that has been applied previously.
Here are some tips that will help you stick to your diet while eating out.
- Choose entrees with fruits and veggies as the main ingredients. They are good sources of dietary fiber as well as of many different vitamins and minerals.
- You can also order a bowl of soup before your meal. Soup is a great appetizer to fill you up, but keep in mind that cream-based soups are definitely things to avoid as they are higher in fat and calories compared to any other soups.
- You can eat the bread, but leave out the butter!
- Look for items on the menu that are baked, grilled, dry-sautéed, boiled, poached or steamed. These cooking techniques use less fat in the food preparation and are generally lower in calories.
- When ordering a grilled dish or vegetable , ask for the light one which is served only little oil or butter.
- When ordering pasta dishes, ask for tomato-based sauces instead of the cream-based sauces.
- If you have a choice of side dishes, order baked potato or steamed vegetables instead of French fries.
- Never be shy to ask the waiter about the portion of your main court and side dish and also ask about the alternation if you think they're against your diet.
- If you crave for a dessert, ask for something low-fat, like sorbet or fruity juice.
- Eat slowly and enjoy the conversation. Put your knife and fork down. Give your body time to digest. Give your stomach time to send signals to your brain that you are full! (It takes about 15 minutes).
- Remember, you do not have to finish everything on your plate!. Stop eating when you are full!.
- When eating a buffet, survey the food items before eating. Remind yourself that you're eating to be healthy! Do not overeat.
- For beverages, always order water, unsweetened iced tea or diet soda. If you want a second beverage, ask for another glass of water. Be careful with the extra calories from the sugar in the iced tea (if you order the sweetened one) and juices.
