UN Climate Change Talks (June 1 to 12) have started with first draft negotiating texts being tabled in Bonn, Germany.
More than 4,000 participants are attending the gathering, including government delegates, representatives from business and industry, environmental organisations and research institutions.
Delegates from 182 countries meeting in Bonn are to discuss negotiating texts which can serve as the basis for an international climate change deal in Copenhagen in December, to follow on the Kyoto Protocol, which expires at the end of 2012.
The negotiating text covers issues of a shared vision for long-term cooperative action, enhanced action on adaptation, mitigation and finance, technology and capacity-building.
Other issues intended for discussion are emissions trading, coverage of emissions credits, the Kyoto Protocol's so-called 'project-based mechanisms' and options for the treatment of land-use, land-use change and forestry.
