Please join me HERE TONIGHT, Wednesday April 16th @ 8PM EST (5 PM Pacific) for a live chat with author Karen White.

Karen White is the author of the novel "The Memory of Water".  On the night their mother drowns trying to ride out a storm in a sailboat, sisters Marnie and Diana Maitland discover there is more than one kind of death. There is the death of innocence, of love, and of hope. Each sister harbors a secret about what really happened that night-secrets that will erode their lives as they grow into adulthood.

After ten years of silence between the sisters, Marnie is called back to the South Carolina Lowcountry by Diana's ex-husband, Quinn. His son has returned from a sailing trip with his emotionally unstable mother, and he is deeply disturbed and refusing to speak. In order to help the traumatized boy, Marnie must reopen old wounds and bring the darkest memories of their past to the surface. And she must confront Diana, before they all go under.

I will try to make it but my daughter has to finish her Junior honors American History thesis tonight so I think I'll be late.

So here is my question: How can you manage to be a writer AND a mom? When my kids were young - I could not manage at all. Now that one is in college and the other in high school, I do work at a job and I am freelancing, but trying to eke out time to work on my novel....I would really love to work at home...then i could work 8 hours a day on it...I've done frozen waffles, too, btw and more...how many hours can you manage in a day? And is it morning or night - or between helping your kids...It is SUCH a tough balance.

Hi, Bridget--I'm here! (by some miracle I might add. Just returned from a meeting at school and on way home realized husband left me with BELOW EMPTY TANK. Didn't know if I'd make it to the gas station. Yeesh!)

Kathryn, in answer to your question, I just do it. My laptop goes with me everywhere (as a matter of fact it went with me today to the horse barn for two hours with my daughter and I sat in the car with my dog and worked!). Have a contract and deadlines is a HUGE motivator--but before I sold my first novel, I'd give myself 'deadlines' ie to enter a contest, or to have a certain number of chapters done perweek to send to my critique partner etc. Whatever works for you to get those pages done. I never wait until the muse strikes me--I write whenever the clock (and laundry!) allows me to. And I'm not a time waster. I'm VERY organized because I have to be if I'm serious about my writing.

Hi, Laura--glad you could join us!

Firstly--let me apologize about Monday night. After I got there and posted a comment, I waited for others to comment and when nothing happened after awhile, I signed off. Duh--I didn't know about that refresher button!! Live and learn...

ANYWAY, yes, I have 7 other novels and all with similar themes (southern women's fiction about family dynamics with a little bit of a mystery and love story thrown in). You can see a list, read excerpts, check out the covers, read reviews etc. on my website at www.karen-white.com

That is a picture of the Clearwater River in central Idaho, near where I grew up!

Gas prices are out of this world, it costs me near $80 to fill up our pick-up these days! With two young kids, soccer, dance, swim lessons, school --- we go through the gas!

Yes, Bridget--the reviews have been positive . That cost me a lot in bribe money, you know!

My daughter takes her driver's license test this Saturday so now there will be THREE cars I'm buying gas for. I told her that if she runs all of my errands I pay for gas. Can't decide if that's a good deal yet or not.

I want to know if it's intentional that the two characters who have an affinity for sailing (Marnie and Gil) both have water-names (Marnie being an anagram for Marine, and Gil sounding like gill the fish-breathing part)?

Also, not a question but I really enjoyed the parallels between the two mute characters - Gil, choosing not to speak because of his fear of exposing the truth, and the grandfather - who wanted to be able to speak, but wasn't able to because of the stroke . How Gil feared 'liars going to hell' because of his grandfather's lessons, and how the grandfather used the bible to communicate - I liked how that all intertwined.

In answer to April's questions:
1) I was inspired (in part) by an article I read in a women's magazine written by two grown sisters who'd been raised by a bipolar mother. It was horrifying to read how at very young ages (6 and 8) they had to get themselves up, dressed and fed for school each morning on their own. Mind-boggling really, especially as a mother myself.

2) Every great book I've ever read has inspired me to write a book of my own that would evoke the same feelings in my readers. The Lowcountry inspires me with its awesome beauty and so does great music. (And it all depends on my mood!)

3) I can not listen to music with words or a heavy beat when I'm writing. Either classical or very quiet jazz only. Although for inspiration I'll crank up a CD of a favorite composer and listen for a bit but will have to turn it down or off to get writing.

Laura--I read your comment about Marnie's and Gil's names on the MOnday chat and I'm astounded! It wasn't intentional but how eerie that you're so right! Like the parallels between Gil and his grandfather, there is so much in that book that came from some place inside of me that I don't even recognize! Truly. I think that's why I was so emotionally exhausted after I finished writing this book.

Karen,

I love it when that happens! I've done that with my own writing, and it always amazes me how much it comes together afterwards. I'm currently in the process of editing my novel and short story collection with hopes of publication someday - do you have any advice for budding authors like me who are looking to break into print with their first book?

Laura--I would suggest finding a local writer's group that is also part of a larger, national organization. In addition to the comaraderie and shared information, these groups usually have large conferences where New York editors and agents attend and meet with authors. This is the BEST way to network and to get your manuscript on top of the pile to be read.

Maryanne--I chose the Lowcountry setting because it's an area of the country that really reasonates with me. I've never lived there, but visit often (am actually driving to Pawleys Island tomorrow!). It's easy to write about an area I feel an affinity towards. I feel as if I've lived there all of my life (and unknown to my husband I WILL have a house down there some day!)

Hi, Vivian--

No, I don't have any first-person experience with bipolar disorder. Only what I learned in my psych classes in college and in research for the book. I read a lot of first-hand accounts to understand what it was like to live with a person afflicted with the disease and then let my imagination do the rest.

That is amazing cause I sensed Diana was in a classic manic eposode when she refused the life jacket and dove into the cold water. They often think they are capable of great feats. I found her to be believable and in most stories I have read I find the mentally ill characters lacking

Georgiana--nope, nothing about this book is autobiographical. I don't even have a sister (although I do have 3 brothers)

The only think that's sort of 'autobiographical' is the story about the black and white puppy, U-dog. We actually got a black and white puppy while I was writing this book and I used the story that Marnie tells Gil about the name of the puppy with my own children. :-)

Vivian,

I noticed that too - though to some extent I wondered if that was an intentional choice on her part, if Diana wanted the water to take her under, to maybe close the cycle of what happened, or maybe end the Maitland curse. Maybe to atone for what happened with Gil on their last boating trip by saving him and sacrificing for him.

It was a bit daunting to write a character with a mental illness. I didn't want to sound ignorant or flippant, nor make the character out to be completely unlikeable. That's why I tried to read as much as I could--especially the first-hand accounts--to get her character to be realistic and her actions understandable.

I didn't intentionally write that last scene with a manic episode in mind for Diana (she was back on my medication by then). I wrote it because I needed a concrete example for Diana to show Gil that she truly loved him and she made the final sacrifice. I did feel, by her choice to not wear the lifejacket, that she wanted to end her cycle of suffering. She couldn't paint while she was on the medication, but she couldn't go off of it. A painful choice the for the artist she was.

Hi Karen! Can only stop by for a moment here as hubby wants me to join him in a walk while our roof is being replaced (lots of loud banging and equipment sounds - ugh!)... I wanted to say how very MUCH I loved "The Memory of Water", and highly recommend it to anyone here in this chat (and then some!)...I also just bought "The Color of Light" and will begin reading it after the current book I'm reading. Your writing and stories are something I can really relate to, and I look forward to reading the remainder of your books that you have authored and all future books as well that are as of yet unwritten!

Sorry your hubby left you with an empty tank... baaaaaddd hubby! ;-D

Goodness, Bridget--you must love big dogs! We have a Havanese (related to the Bichon family). He's full grown at 20 pounds (and that's big for a Havanese) but his fur is like silk and he doesn't shed! (necessary for my husband's allergies). I'll definitely post a photo of him--but I'll have to decide whether to post the one of him in his Superdog outfit or his argyle sweater. Did I mention I'm a first-time dog owner and he's become my baby? He even has his own carseat...

Another question - was it difficult writing from the perspective of four different people, or did the character voices evolve in your head and tell their own stories, so to speak?

I had to stop in and see what people are saying because your book still haunts me. I was so shocked to get to the Q & A section and discover your family history about siblings which I don't want to reveal here for fear of ruining the book for someone else.

Laura---the characters were SO strong that it was an easy decision to give them each a say. I'm trying this method again for the book I'm writing now, but it will only be from two points of view---the main character and her grandmother's best friend. Since the grandmother's best friend know THE SECRET, it was important to get her point of view--especially since she's completely different than the protagonist. It's emotionally, exhausting, though, since I sort of 'chanel' each character as I write them.

Ooh, thanks Karen - I want a bookplate for my book. Right now my mother is reading it, by the way, and she likes it too.

I still don't know how you captured the dynamics of sisters so well. I am in awe of that, not to mention the fact that you came up with a story that was unflinchingly honest.

Thanks, Jo. I find that I write about sisters a lot. My mother is the oldest of 5 sisters and I would always find their dynamic just fascinating--and it reminded me again and again of what I was missing by having three annoying brothers! I think that writing novels allows me to play God a little bit--giving me the chance to explore other lives and create situations and family relationships that I want to experience without really going there in real life. When my third brother was born, I cried so much and then proceeded to dress him up as a little girl (and call him Stephanie) until he was old enough to fight back! Thanks goodness I have a daughter...

One last question from me - are your kids (or kid- I don't know how many you have!) into writing? Anyone following in your footsteps?

Oh no, your poor brother!

I have two brothers no sisters myself- but they escaped all that because they're both older than me. ;)

Karen,

too funny! I have a younger sister and a younger brother! My sister and I have an amazing bond and relationship even as adults!

And my daughter's name is Stephany! :)

My daughter tends to shy away from creative writing mostly--although she's an awesome reader and has always been in Honors English and will be doing AP English next year (the apple doesn't fall far from the tree :-) ) She'd actually make a great book editor because she's one of the best critiquers I've ever met!

My son, however, is Mr. Math & Science. I guess this clean division might have something to do with my husband being a banker whose emails make me cringe they're so boring

My brother, Steven, got married a few years ago and I told that story about him wearing girl clothes for such a long time and now his friends all call him Stephanie. ;-)

I'm starting to explore sibling relationships more and more in my books--living with the intense sibling rivalry between my two (they're 21 months apart) is plenty of fodder!

Karen,

My dad's name is Steven! His sister, Donna, was 11 months older than him and always called him Stephanie when they were kids!

When we found out we were pregnant with our daughter, she was due a week before my dad turned 50!

So, we named her Stephany after him!

I do love that name--and my brother Steven is expecting a little girl this summer. I might have to call her Stephanie regardless of what they decide to name her!
