Did Your Kids'/Grandkids' School Show "The Speech?"

my granddaughter said she watched it on her lunch time she didn't have to much to say about it

Our school system showed the speech and allowed kids whose parents opted them out to go to an alternative room while it aired.

My children and grandchildren are good llib-ruls, have all seen President Obama speak in person, and wouldn't have missed this opportunity. I expect at least one of them to have this speech memorized by the end of the week.

As a retired teacher, I speculate that only the serious students paid it much attention.

At the beginning of the year, the others were looking around to see how people are dressed, who is sitting next to whom, who is good looking.

Yeah, and the girls do that too.

...and any speech OVER 2 min is too long - as that is the attention span of children.

There HAVE been reports of children turning into flesh eating, socialist zombies, in western Pennsylvania and everywhere in Texas except Austin. LOL

I am laughing at Leo's comment. I believe he's right. First day of school is too exciting to pay attention to much other than friends.

I haven't heard from my granddaughters yet. I've read the speech and found nothing objectionable. It is motivating, if not inspired.

A LOT (probably a majority) of schools around the country started LAST Tuesday.

I don't have children in school anymore. I think Michigan public schools start the day after Labor Day now, don't they? Private schools may start earlier. I know the schools in the southern states begin and dismiss earlier.

Chuck, that means The President lost a lot of those kids at the line "For many of you today is the first day of school..." and they went "Wha! Hey! No fair! Why can't we go to that school?"

I'm sorry. I don't quite understand why you felt the need to insult me. I watched the speech and thought he did an excellent job. The question was did my children's school show the President's speech and I answered it.

I guess Mad River Schools decided the elementary level wouldn't benefit from a presidential speech... Raven said they didn't show it at his school. I am sure it will be online soon enough.
I won't hear anything from the girls until our next visit, but since their bio-mom thinks she is a conservative, and they all ready have their own opinions, I doubt any "indoctrination" could have taken place even if that had been the goal.

...and it's sad that it was demonized.

i try to find excuses for the level of vitriole dispersed by/about That Fella (Obama); i ran out a while ago, though.

these days, i read/hear it all with a raised brow. and no solid theories.

or maybe i'm afraid of my theories. -maybe i'm afraid that the answer, in general, is far simpler than i could admit to myself.

My 4th grader's teacher showed the speech and then went on with the rest of her day. No discussion at all. My 7th grader didn't see it. As I mentioned in a previous post, the issue was not with the speech, it was with the lesson plans from the Dept. of Education.

Which was NOT true for pretty much anybody else whose comments I saw... until the last two days. This brouhaha was about OBAMA and the SPEECH until then.

John, mebbe YOU did, but all I read and heard for a solid MONTH was, "that man is creepy," "that man shouldn't be talking to our children," "our children shouldn't be subjected to Obama's liberal politics," "the idea of him forcing his liberal politics on our children is just WRONG!" Etc., etc., etc., and on and on and on. There was NOTHING about "It wasn't the speech, it was the lesson plans (I will grant, the lesson plans came up WITH the speech)." Obama was the problem, and the speech was the problem.

Then, abruptly (about the time the actual speech came out), it was all about the lesson plans. Then, when they came out, and they didn'[t say what CATO said they did, there was a switch back to it being Obama. The last thing I heard was that the speech was OK, and the lesson plans were OK, but those liberal TEACHERS were going to twist them all to brainwash our kids.

Good speech, I don't have any kids in school but I know many in Chicago that watched the broadcast.

No they did not see it not my daughter's children anyway. First they are home schooled and second we are grieving over the loss of their little brother who passed away three weeks ago. Some of the other grandchildren might have seen it, m sons children perhaps.

My college students will find it required reading this semester.

As I feared, my grandson's Principal decided she wouldn't. The excuse was that she hadn't had "enough fore-warning." Michigan schools started today, so her excuse was that she couldn't send 'permission slips' home to parents.

PERMISSION SLIPS?!? Why/how was there EVER any issue here? This is/was just STUPID! This has been an embarrassment from the beginning. And we had school administrations caving in to the CATO Institute lies. What a shame.

They thought it was a good speech, telling them that if they ever wanted to amount to something they needed to get a education.I also thought it was a good speech, nothing that I saw or heard that would make any kid rattle brained

I would think it would be a fantastic opportunity for a kid to learn that you can be what you dream...just work at it. Nothing can stop you.

I'll let you all know--he was actually in my grandson's school in Arlington. I'm heading to visit them this week and will get a play be play from David. He was very excited about the event--this being his first day in the high school and having the Pres there.

I haven't been a fourteen-year-old for over 50 years. Girl? Hardly.

The son of one of our employees saw the speech and said that he felt Obama was talking directly to him. He was very impressed and said that he couldn't quit school now because Obama was "counting on him." I loved that. He's only nine.

I felt that way when I heard Obama speak, especially when he made reference to Spider-Man. I was like, "Nerd love over here, fanboy!"

Anybody else think about Gather when he mentioned several drafts before handing in a paper?

I don't actually have any kids or have any nephews or nieces. But I would have gladly allowed my children to watch this speech.

Surprisingly, Cheyenne, WY schools were on the mark. No word on how many parents kept their kids out today, though.
My daughter had several options on where to be during the original airing. (Little slacker tells me she wasn't impressed, though. So much for my hope of hypnotism to make her pass all her classes...)

No, I hit Cheyenne one snowy January 1st (1968), comin' out of Ogalalla, anI got LOST... REALLY LOST. Took me four hours to find the expressway (they were still built only here-'n-there), and it was CLOSED, but nobody TOLD US. So off we went, to Medicine Bow, where they told us we couldn't have gotten there because it was closed. Scary day.

I watched it with my students. The only indoctrination that I observed is the idea that public schools are a positive place, the message was to stay in school. This was against many on the far right who are actively trying to destroy public education. I was impressed with the message. Whatever lesson plans were suggested I ignored as most teachers do.

We don't ignore our own lesson plans. Those are carefully thought out and written down. Our lesson plans are based upon our state professional standards and federal guidelines that we know we need to follow so that our students have any chance of passing statewide tests. We always look at lesson plans made or suggested by others. We use them if we can, adapt some of them if we can't use all of the lesson plans, even take an idea or two if we can't do that. Sometimes we have to ignore lesson plans that will not fit in to our class. We are held accountable to what we teach not for what someone suggests we should. More and more is expected of us, we have no time to for what won't work

I.E.-- The kids will pay attention if you come in dressed up like Gene Simmons and talk about how rock music and math go together.

This was such a dumb controversy. The speech was no different than similar speeches given by previous presidents.

Only that the speech was better and he relates to children better than any President except maybe Clinton.

My kids aren't in school anymore. Had they been there, they probably would have been either (a) watching/rating "the babes" or (b) asking the teachers what everyone was afraid of, inciting in mass ridicule, resulting in a call for me to come get them for being rabble rousers.

We got a recorded message yesterday that they were going to show the speech. My son said that the speech was very good, that he learned a lot about Obama's childhood and couldn't believe that his mom home-schooled him at 4:30 in the morning. He said he got something out of it. He said there were a lot of kids at the school. I was proud of his school for showing it.

My kids went to school conservatives and came home liberals... I would say dang that Obama but I am just so proud of them now since Obama allowed them to think for themselves :)

Actually I am quite irritated. Our kids didnt even know about the speech when I asked them about it so they werent even givent the option to see it.

My daughters are all virtual adults. And they are not in class yet. Tomorrow the senior in h.s. starts. Dang. I was at the dentist or I would have watched it.

My son didn't say much about it. Knowing him , Matthew probably rested his eyes for awhile. lol

Too bad. That means he was one of the kids who needed most to hear the message.

Nope. We didn't ask. We didn't see/hear much controversy about it, we don't watch much TV or listen to the radio much. We spend our time together doing more important things.

i think that my school district was one that declined to show it, Chesterfield County Virginia. Insult where I live all you want, I will agree with you, it's a suburban area with a lot of conservative white people who like SUVs and don't think much.

My son saw it and hey, he's been an Obama fan since last year. And not influence by me. He said McCain looked scary. but his grade school watched it and he said he's washing his hands but only does his homework because that let's him go out for recess.

My little grands said they watched it. First Grade and Third Grade .... little ladies both of them and could have cared less. First grader said he sounded mad...LOL. Neither of them remember anything he said, LOL.

to be frank,,, my gson didnt understand to much of it. I pick him up and he told me that Obamam was in Nebraska, never knew where he was at. Then he and I got on the internet and I got a copy of the speech, and went to expalin it at his level, he is only7. I thought it was great how Obamam did this,, yet I think it should went to the older one like 6 grade and on up

I had already echoed Angela's say that the speech tended to be a little long and would only bore the children. Yes, I do not see anything extraordinary listening to a speech by the President. It makes sense that way. But to drive too much matter into young minds would appear intoxicating children whose look out is to enjoy some learning and some naughty moments. School days only add up to the fun of enjoying company as Leo put it.

Our school district has been in school for two weeks and found it would be too disruptive of their schedule. Yes, we're in Texas. They promised to put the link in the school website after the speech is archived for those who wish to view it.
That's over 60,000 students and teachers who haven't been turned into zombie lib-ruls, at least for now.
