well it depends on how big he is, there is a new one called a robo hamster they cost about 20.00 a Campbells drawf cost between 5-10 robos (Roborovskis)are extremely tiny, on and these hamsters like to have another hamster as a friend they are happier in pairs unlike the Siberian hamster

i was at the pet store earlier and lifted up a hamster house and i sware there were 20 robos in one tiny little house i lifted it up and there were all these little eyes looking at me as if to say why did you do that LOL when the price goes down i want a pair to breed

I was thinking maybe a robo. They seem to live a bit longer, too. We want another one, but have to wait for the next litter (2 weeks) but that's the plan.

This one was just under $10 to get.

they dont ever seam to get over the your going to kill me thing if hes a Campbell, even my daughters tamest ones still done that and she would just pick them up. Im sorta kicking myself for not getting more hamsters over the rats i just got, i like the rats but they just need so much time compared to hamsters, and now they have tri colored hamsters, black white and brown and they are so cute it was hard to come out of the pet store with out another pet LOL

I like rats until I see their tails, LOL. I think you get used to that, but still. And there's never any rats around here for sale, anyway.

And that's real sad if he doesn't get over that fear of us. :( I'd like him to want to play and to come out on our hand sometime.

Oh well, we'll make him get used to us lol. He is in the quiet room (Gideon's room) though.

I'm happy to report that little Shadow is as friendly as ever. You put your hand down and she'll crawl right on it to play!

I've never seen a dwarf this color. I had a Siberian dwarf one time years ago. She never got used to being handled and continued to bite the hand that fed her. She was still awfully cute. But, I ended up taking her back to the store I had bought them from. The same thing happened when I had two male gerbils from the same litter. The poor creatures were so afraid that they bit to draw blood. I didn't have this issue with the teddy bear or the angora or the golden, though (standard size hamster). I loved my rats the best, though.

Aww I've seen a lot of dwarf colors, but none like this either - not even online. I kinda like the unique coloring and the belly is gray with a white cross pattern by the arms. Quite unique. Maybe some time I can get a belly photo.

I hope this one (and the one we get in 2 weeks to keep it company) aren't like that. As it is the 24 mice don't like being handled - we probably could tame them but good luck learning which are tame or not in the colony. They are all white albinos, lol.

Our syrian never much liked being handled either. Sad, too, he was a beautiful animal (panda bear hammy)

I've heard so many say how wonderful ratties are as pets. None here in the stores, or one day we might find out, lol.

Keep looking, because the major pet stores do sell pet rats from time to time. My first one I got at a local store that used to sell live feeders for snakes. This was years ago. My rat was supposed to be a feeder, but he turned out to be a great pet. That pet store stopped selling live feeders. I think people were getting upset about that idea, so the store owner started only getting frozen feeders for the snakes. My baby rat grew to be a big boy and was so gentle. He was my favorite. Now, though, I'm so allergic to everything. After my kitty lives her life, I won't be able to get another cat either. It's so hard, because I love them all.

Yeah, that's probably why we don't see them here. All we have is a local shop and a hardware store that also sells pets.

Petsmart is an hour away, so that's kinda hard to do and stress the animal on that long drive home. :(

I wonder if they have feeder rats at our local store. They have feeder mice (in the back room)

It's kinda sad how those wonderful pets are eaten. Gideon still says he wants a snake. I don't think I could feed them live mice when we have those same mice here as pets!

Awww you suffer from the allergies like I do. It's a horrible curse, isn't it?

Yes, allergies are a curse. My friend's grown son has some pythons. He can't stand the idea of feeding them live mice either, so he buys the frozen feeders for his snakes. He would want to make pets out of the mice if they were alive. So, here is a snake owner who knows how other people feel.

When I was raising my rat, I got him used to having his little nails trimmed with baby human nail clippers, since their little nails are as sharp as glass. I also got him used to letting me put a cheap adjustable cat harness on him, so I could take him outside. I only took him outside in the nice weather. Rats can get pneumonia easily.

I would advise buying a rat care book. You already have a good idea of how to raise rodents, but there are a few things different about rats that you need to learn about. You will love rats, I know you will. They are social creatures and actually want to be your buddy much more than any hamster does.

Angela seems to think it could be a Campbell's. The interesting thing is that there's a site online with all the dwarf hamster colors and none look like her.

As for holding, well, I hope you are right, but some just aren't into holding. Our female mice aren't and our degu isn't either (but he LOVES his scratches, just doesn't want to be picked up) So we'll see. :)

Hammies are really cute.

They are. And this one is a DOLL. She's already tame. I picked her up last night and she didn't fight it.

And twice more today. The second time today she walked right on my hand. :) Which is just amazing. Kipper our Syrian NEVER tamed.

Any dwarf hamster I knew someone had always bit......so no clues here. But they are cute critters.

Really? How odd. I've had her out three times in the last 24 hours and she hasn't bit or nibbled once.

I breed these and the standard as well as many other rodents...
These do have a tendency to get tumors, they get EXTREMELY mean cause they are in so much pain (I assume?). I would take the tumor ones in and give the kids a baby. The parents and I would tell the kids they were retiring at my shop. At the parents request of course. Free of charge.
Unlike the standard hamsters these live in colonies. I had a huge set up for show which was just a open area, on top, and a thriving colony inside. So people could see how they may live in the wild..... Problematic was the inner breeding. Which produces unhealthy offspring.
Though by now these mini hamsters are so inner bred, domesticated who knows how there personalities are now? They make great pets for a short time! Though paying anything over $1.00 for them is over charging. BUT the breeders do have to keep them away from the snake people who feed these to there reptiles.
If a male you will soon find out lol!! They can breed very young, and very rapidity! If not careful you could have 100 with just owning two in no time!

These are not like the standard hamsters.....

Oh, I sure hope she doesn't develop a tumor. Will kill us to see that happen as their lives are so short as it is.

As for breeding, tell me about it. We found that out when we had a pregnant mouse brought home. Oh my gosh they breed and breed and breed! We will get the same gender as this one (which we are certain is a female) and they'll hopefully accept each other as they will be different litters and different ages (but the same breeding pair as used for her, so family)
