On a recent trip to Tulsa, Ok., my family and I stopped by the Tulsa Historical Society Museum. On the front lawn were several statues of ballerinas in various poses. These statues, called The Five Moons, represent five young ladies born in small Oklahoma towns, all of Native American descent.
Maria Tallchief, the first American ballerina to perform in a major European ballet and America's first Prima Ballerina. Her sister, Majorie Tallchief, both of the Osage Tribe. Rosa Hightower, from the Choctaw Tribe. Yvonne Chouteau, from the Cherokee Tribe and Moscelyene Larkin from the Shawnee Tribe.
According some dance historians, "The world of ballet was exclusively European until these five Indian women, all from small Oklahoma towns, came along."
