Cancel Your Credit Cards Before You Die

Ooops I didn't cancle them and as I wrote this not I just took my last breath.
That could happen to anyone!

This is so completely true. My dad died at the end of last year and it took about 4 month to get the credit cards companies sorted out. We would tell one department then a week later someone else called. Finally we had to report it to the I kid you not "Death Division". It was completely Ri-dic-u-lous!

I dont think they teach people to think anymore. Half the people who graduate cant give you change for a ten without a cash register telling them how much to give you.
We learned important things to help with our lives in the future. I dont think they teach them anything now.

When my father died he owed about $2,000 dollars on his card, something I didn't know for several months. According to the law if you post his death notice in a local newspaper all creditors have (I think) 90 days to request payment from the estate. They tried to collect from me a year later, but it wasn't my account and I wasn't obligated to pay.

I occasionally get a bill even now from some collection agency. The bills shrink as they get passed down the line in bulk purchases for less than 10 cents on the dollar. One time I figured I'd negotiate out from under it for $119 and then paid the amount becasue I felt sorry for them. That was a big mistake because they lied about closing the account, sold it to another agency, and I was hounded for the full amount with penalties and interest for another 2 years.

When my sister died, our attorney told us, we are not obligated to contact anyone she owed money to, and disclose the fact of her death. Don't answer any calls, or mail. Do NOTHING.

The creditors have , in Texas, 120 days to file any claim against the estate of the deceased, or they are out of luck. Period!

Many companies do try to collect from relatives, and even attempt to make the relativrs believe they are liable for the debts, but it's a lie. Some even make threats.

There is no OBLIGATION to pay the debts of the dearly departed. That is up to the estate. There is no OBLIGATION to even pay for a funeral, that is up to the estate. If there is no monies in the Estate the creditors are up the creek, the county has to pay for the funeral. Ever hear that add, "I didn't want to leave my family with the burden of my final expenses"? DAMN LIE.

I've read this before as an email forward (or something very similar). It's hard for a family to sort all of this out, and if someone has been very careful with their credit their whole lives, it's painful to leave a blot like that after their death. It sounds strange, but I know it's true.

That is funny. I am sure it was not to the family member though.

They may not be able to collect it, but they do try. So, I would advise anyone who does not want to put their family through a hassel like this cancel their cards today - we never know when we are going to die. We don't have a credit card and do not desire to have one - we get along fine without them most of the time.

Another thing that has been hard for us to get through to people is that my aunt and uncle died several years ago - we have the same phone number they did. We have paid the bill in our name for 8 years now and we still get phone calls for them--the same companies that we have told numerous times they are deceased. I am ready to give them the cemetery address, too! We probably get two or more calls for them every two months sometimes more often.

This happens more than alot of people know.
