I wrote this poem this morning, on a photographic drive through rural Horry County, SC. It was my hope to find a little history through my viewfinder; perhaps I have. Streaker and I made five stops along the way to record these images. And at each stop, I found myself writing a verse to this poem. I dedicate this poem and these photos to my friend Jan of Michigan. Her gift is encouraging others; and she does it so very well. Thanks Jan! - Robert B, a simple man.

GIFTS OF GOD
©2009 Robert C Burnham
In the middle of nowhere
In the absence of sound
I’m looking for something special
That in this world cannot be found
Not within the forests
Or throughout the farms and glades
It’s not out there upon the desert
And nowhere is it made
It doesn’t come from history
Or even from outer space
I feel it is a part of me
But I don’t see it in this place
I can’t get it from university
And tenure doesn’t lay it at my door
It can’t be earned through seniority
But I’ve been told it exists for sure
Searching in the middle of nowhere
Where is God’s gift to me?
Many folks have told me I have one
So why can’t I just see?

Thank you,

from the pictures, there are miles and miles of natures wonderous displays
that spirit inside is connected to a Source, I bet
Our spiritual gifts from God are not always readily visible to us. Others see them and benefit from them. The gifts are not usually tangible. I believe they are called gifts because we're meant to share them. In sharing our gifts, we all benefit and that is God's plan.
You are a very gifted poet, Robert. Your poetry is a gift to all who read it. You have an eye for natural beauty and your photos speak to our hearts.
Maybe what we see that you're missing is that YOU are the biggest part of the gift. You are a writer, a friend, and a source of inspiration to all who know you. You touch people's lives in ways you may never know.
I'm not sure why or how God chooses which talents to give to each of us. Professional athletes have visible gifts that have great monetary value. Loving, spiritual people like you are priceless. I know who I want for my friend: YOU.
At the day of reckoning, which will mean more? A man who hits 500 home runs or a man who encourages and inspires others?
God has allowed me to write and to have a photographer's eye, I won't deny that.
I've been pretty darn broke and thought about considering the lilies of the field who neither spin nor toil...yet they thrive. They also die when the cold weather comes. I wish I had answers for you and better yet, a great job. All I can offer is encouragement and friendship.
These times try our faith. Once the problems are resolved, we wonder why we had doubts. It's just the waiting that is so hard.
Thanks for posting this to my new group Barns ~ Outbuildings ~ Sheds
The photos are really awesome.
Pay it Forward. :)
Have a great week.
These are lovely photos, Robert. They are simple and serene. It's like looking back to a simpler time.
Many folks have told me I have one
So why can’t I just see?"
:)
God is in each and everyone of us.
The tombstone - my Uncle Bill would love it! He's a woodsman by trade and spirit - I'll be sure to show it to him when he visits.
The shadow - my favorite photo here is the one with this post's author's shadow!
As I'm out taking photos, or driving the backroads slowly, looking for unsuspecting victims to capture for posterity, I watch as almost everyone drives by and are just too busy gabbing on their cell phone, to even know there's a whole world around them.
everything I was going to say. But I do love your gift..
and thank you very much for sharing it with us. I loved
that cow Robert !!
Hugs, Barbie
