I love Christmas, what it means, and the good it seems to bring out in people. On the flip side of that, though, I also hate the season for the commercialism and the pressure that the commercialism seems to heap upon those of us who celebrate the season. So, I wrote this...
The Grinch Did Not Steal Christmas
It's the end of December
another day of another year.
I seem to recall that once
this was a time especially dear.
It was a time of jubilation--
to reflect on my life's worth.
A time of heart-felt rejoicing
the Event of My Savior's Birth.
I was surrounded by happy faces.
I embraced chilled, starry nights.
I honored my neighbors' celebration
of their Miracle of Lights.
However...in our modern world
reside some hardened hearts
who, in their quest of political correctness,
trampled on my religious rights.
It's now all about buying presents
of indulgence and expense.
Forgotten is the intention of
the love those gifts represent.
Removed is "Merry Christmas"
and scenes of The Nativity.
I no longer hear the carols
that refer to what's dear to me.
Instead, it's "Happy Holidays!"
I ask: A holiday of what?
"Warm Wishes" or "Season's Greetings"--
The meaning's long been forgot.
If "they" don't believe in Christmas
then why do "they" acknowledge it at all?
"They" only promote this season
so I will spend money at the mall.
Christmas is not what it used to be.
Its significance has gone astray.
We can't blame the Grinch for stealing Christmas.
We let Christmas slip away.
