A few tips for the man who plans to buy clothes for a woman can be most helpful if they are good tips. If a man wants the clothes to be a surprise and has never gone shopping for the lady before, he needs to find out some important information first.
If he has access to her clothes closet, it's best to make a time to do some inspection of what she already wears. Look for what she has recently worn and didn't ask, "Does this make me look fat?" Or, "Does this color look good on me?" The ones that prompted the questions are ones to avoid. Buying clothes for a woman can be an art. And many women may not know 'art,' but they know what they like.
After locating one or two that she wears with pride and comfort, he should take these down and make a thorough inspection of the fabric, the size, and care tag. Doing this will give him a place to start when he enters the clothing store to do some serious shopping. Jot down the size so as not to forget. Notice if the garment must be dry cleaned or if she launders it. This is a key to what she likes; and can perhaps afford.
Also when examining the garments there in her closet, the man should make note of the presence and length of any sleeves, length of hem line and where the waits is, whether high or low or maybe there is no definite waist. Does she wear a lot of belts, dresses with collars and such items as sequins, rhinestones or special buttons? Make a list of these things to remember.
Our shopper should take the list along on the trip to his chosen buying destination. And there he really must find a helpful sales person who can direct him to the correct size. If he chooses to confide in this person, they may be able to offer invaluable assistance in finding just the right article of clothing to please the lady.
If the recipient is only a friend or perhaps a relative, other help can be sought in the person who is closest to the intended receiver. The male would-be-buyer who feels reluctant and perhaps intimidated can ask that this other individual go in search of the necessary information, create a list and provide help to make the shopping trip a success.
Another very important point our shopper should remember is that though he is looking for something similar to what the lady already wears, already likes and wears often, she will not want a carbon copy of any of those pieces. Stores generally have each piece in several colors, and some women, probably not the majority, will buy more than one item of a particular style in different colors. But this writer does not recommend this to the man who is shopping to please. Why'? One reason is because if she has worn the piece for sometime, she has likely had the opportunity to buy another in a different color if she wanted to do so. Also, though she wears an item of clothing a lot, it does not necessarily mean she is one who would welcome a copy. Of course, this is something the man can do while making his list: notice whether the woman has more than one dress of a particular style, cut and design. The lady herself is giving the man inside information, though unaware, about what she really likes.
Armed with the all important list, standing inside one of the better stores for ladies clothing, and being assisted by a knowledgeable sales associate, our shopper has a very good chance at a grand success.

One thing I would add: When checking for sizes, look at the brand name vs the size. For example Express size 7 is not a wal-mart size 7. Most sales people should be able to help you translate the sizes/brands if you bring the list with you. :)
For example, womens Express jeans size 7, according to the chart is a size 8 Perry Ellis womens line.
Clothing is a lot like shoes....size gives an idea, but not an absolute. If she wears a six, for example, the six he buys might not fit exactlly, but she she shouldn't complain that he bought the wrong size, and that should be something simple to correct.
Thanks for the input
The only people I shop for besides myself though are my kids and grandkids. That is different.
