As I was driving in to work this morning they were talking about this list of the top 10 romantic movies of the last 25 years, and named them off. I was stunned as I listened to the list. What idiot made the list, because well, they're an idiot!
So when I got in I looked up the list, and found the top 25. The list is below.
The top 10, I definitely disagree with. Granted, I have not seen all 25 of the listed movies, so there are some that I have no opinion of. But, there are a number of very romantic movies that aren't even ON the list, and some (There's Something About Mary was ONE OF THE WORST MOVIES I'VE EVER WATCHED -AND NOT ROMANTIC AT ALL), and well, the list maker is an idiot, in my humble opinion.
I can name several movies that should be in the top 25, if not the top ten, but the ONE movie that should have been #1 or at LEAST in the top 5 isn't there. The folks on the radio this morning are in agreement with me:
I don't care who you are. That is, hands down, the most romantic movie you'll watch.
Here's the list.
Tell me what YOU think is missing.
1. Titanic
2. Moulin Rouge
3. Once
4. Brokeback Mountain
5. A Room With A View
6. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
7. When Harry Met Sally....
8. Jerry Maguire
9. Pretty Woman
10. There's Something About Mary
11. Edward Scissorhands
12. Lost in Translation
13. Dirty Dancing
14. Ghost
15. Out of Africa
16. Amelia
17. Say Anything...
18. Moonstruck
19. Y Tu Mama Tambien
20. In the Mood for Love
21. The English Patient
22. Sid and Nancy
23. The Wedding Singer
24. The Piano
25. Beauty and the Beast
Now, you know you're having the same reaction I had.
What about (insert your favorite romantic movie here) ?
Tell me what's missing.

I have not seen The Notebook
I'd have to give your question some thought. Many of the things many consider romantic, I don't and vice versa.
I don't consider Beauty and the Beast the most romantic Disney movie, even. Hmm.
You should most definitely watch The Notebook.
And I'm the same as you, I don't always consider what someone else thinks is romantic as romantic, but I know when a movie sucks. LOL
See, my favorite movie ever made is The Philadelphia Story with Cary Grant, Kate Hepburn and Jimmy Stewart. I think it's romantic, funny, and a whole lot of other things. Some people think I'm nuts. LOL
But The Notebook not even being on the list? That's just crazy.
I think Moulin Rouge is a good #2. That movie is super-duper romantic.
I liked Moulin Rouge, but I do not in any way think it is top 2 material.
But then, if you ask him what his two favorite recent romantic movies are, he will immediately say City of Angels and You've Got Mail.
He's a sap.
Joy, I agree about Eternal Sunshine.. excellent movie and definitely deserves to be on the list.
Lost in Translation was OK, but not one of my favorites.
Nicole Kidman owed me FOUR hours of my life.
DH walked out of the theatre and left me watching it alone. The Kid wasn't much better. I had to watch it to the end. I'm that way about movies, especially if I have paid to get in.
Doyle, that's a good one, too, and a favorite. It is in my DVD collection. (Which is HUGE, btw).
...Kinda' like fooling around on her fiance in Titanic...and starting a realtionship with a death is usually bad form. You just KNOW no man ever compared for the rest of her life....poor guys. They never had a prayer. :)
My Fair Lady.
But see, I argued the whole adultery thing with him before. He hated Bridges for the adultery, but LOVES Casablanca .
Heather, I don't know. It was romantic, yes, for a cartoon, but not top of the list-worthy.
Also love The Notebook.
I've always loved Colonel Brandon in Sense and Sensibility. I'm a sap!
Eternal Sunshine of A Spotless Mind - It lost me on the first scene on the bus, I stopped right there.
Memoirs of a Geisha (I know, I'm sick).
You are right this list stinks.
My favorite romantic movie of all time is Notorious with Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman. Maytime would also be on that list. OK, I have a few.
I would likely have included The Last of the Mohicans (as much for the British soldier on the pit as anything else - I like complex stories.)
I might also have included Still Breathing, Love Actually, Truly, Madly, Deeply, ...
I'm still thinking. I don't watch "drama" much so I expect my idea of romances will be, uh, different.
OK, so now I have to go watch Crouching Tiger.
Stephanie, me too.
The Notebook was a tear jerker, but it reminded me of my grandparents, their romance and loss of him to Alzheimers.
The only other one that I can think of that isn't old is Message in a Bottle with Kevin Costner.
Now if we are talking classic movies....I just watched Anna Karenina. That one gets me every time.
Or maybe Brief Encounter....goes along with the unrequited adultery thing you guys have mentioned.
Message in a Bottle is a good choice.
I haven't seen the Fountain, but I will definitely put it on my list.
The Notebook should be on there....as should A Walk to Remember
And I do love Beauty and the Beast...it's sweet.
"What's missing"...........ahhhhhhhhhhhh "Gone With the Wind"!!! (HeeHee)
A Room with a View
Brokeback Mountain
Moonstruck
Cinema Paradiso
Return to Me
Chocolat
Sense and Sensibility
The King and I
West Side Story
When Harry Met Sally
Any of the Tracy/Hepburn movies
All the merchandising and princess crap ruined the Disney movies for me.
St. Joy The Baptist "Foot Chassis Palin" M. Cranky-Pants, Mercenary , Sep 23, 2008, 12:39pm EDT
Uhh... YEAh, Joy. Exactly.
OK folks, remember - the LAST 25 years, not of all time. There are a TON that are way older that are way better than many on the list here.
Only movies since 1983 count here.
Lainie, I'm aware of that.
It's OK.
Repeat after me.
Drugs are our friend.
(you know I'm kidding, right)
Druuuuuuugs.
Sweet Home Alabama.
There are others, I'm sure.
