Welcome back to this week's edition of If it's Tuesday, This Must be Belgium. Normally I post photos that I have taken on various trips. But this week I'm posting photos from someone else's trip. Last year a friend of mine attended a conference in the Netherlands, the focus of which was essentially green engineering, alternative energy sources, and climate change.
Like any scientific conference there are more than anyone's share of lab experiments. I'm not sure what he's doing with those balloons, but I notice everyone else is keeping their distance.

And since it was in the Netherlands (Holland to some), there was the field trip to see the windmills.

Once inside you can see that the wind turns the vanes on the windmill, which turns the shaft. If you look close you can see it is spinning really fast.

And the shaft turns the grinding wheel

I like this photo

And this really cool shot down onto the canal (hint, we're headed there next)

Since this was an alternative energy conference, they of course had to have a solar powered boat race. Check out the cool solar panels.

And the race is on...

Okay, it's not that sunny...which is problematic. It's like sailing with no wind.

Okay, now we're moving

Oh no, he's catching up

Well, I have no idea who won the race. But I'm willing to bet it was this guy...(I want this boat!!)

Race is over...and so is our visit. This last photo has nothing to do with the conference other than it was in the town in which it was held. I just think it looks picturesque. What do you think?

I'm off to...well, I'm not sure. But I'll definitely take some photos. Thanks for joining me on this week's virtual adventure.

We had a windmill when I was growing up in New England. Wind turbines have come a long way since then. Windmills are very nostalgic and have a certain charm that the modern wind turbines lack.
My husband (and engineer) and I enjoyed watching a similar race on TV of solar powered cars!
Thanks for taking us along on your adventure! Are we getting closer to "Dr." David???
I only ask because my friend is a little closer to getting hers in! :) Happy travels
I'm willing to bet those balloons had methane in them.
Explosive and smelly, what more could you want.:~P
That boat does look very cool (the bat boat wanna be).
Are those photovoltaic cells that make up its skin?
I like the (probably accidental) pink overtones in some of these photos, btw.
I miss Holland.
I've done the sailing thing without wind... It's called rowing, or ... drifting... or, enjoying the peace and quite... It's called 'a different pace of life'
Thanks David
