William B. Umstead State park came into being back in the Depression era. It was once farm land, but the farmers who tried to make their living off of this plot of land discovered that its soil was unsuitable for agriculture.
The Roosevelt Administration decided, in 1935, to rescue the land and transform it into a state park. They condemned the farms, purchased the land and then spent the next several years transforming the area into the park that we enjoy today.
We are fortunate to live very close to this beautiful park, if you are ever in this part of North Carolina you owe it to yourself to stop and enjoy it for a little while.
The park offers campsites, picnic areas, 3 lakes where you can fish or rent a canoe and paddle around. They have trails designated for bike riding, horseback riding and hiking.
We spent less than an hour there this morning, but I snapped a few photos of the things we saw to share with you. I hope you will enjoy our little walk.

Thank you Sonia, it was so hot and humid we were trying to hurry so I wasn't sure what I was going to end up with. I want to go back when its cooler, I'm sure its gorgeous in the fall!
There weren't many people there today Sandy, too hot and humid I guess. Plus this is tax-free school shopping weekend so my guess is they were all at the malls!
Thank you j r. You should get a babysitter! ;-)
Thanks Jonathan, we are lucky and we need to get out and enjoy it more often!
Thank you lori, I love posting them too. I didn't know John was going to want to go out there this a.m. so I was pleasantly surprised to have something new to take photos of besides your favorite squirrels. ;-)
*flipping back through them to find which ones I like the best*
Can't do it! I LOVE them all! You sure have an 'eye' for taking great shots. :)
Natalie, thanks for the feature!
You know I never get tired of natures scenes. Beautiful!
I can't wait to go back in the fall when the leaves are changing...that should make for some awesome photos, don't you think?
Actually I did tell you in the article Dorine, you must have missed it. This is in North Carolina.
Thanks Ron.
Sonia, I took 3 shots of the shrooms, I had a hard time deciding which one to use.
Vicky that is one of my favorite songs.
Donna, thanks, I love the scent of the Honesuckle's.
arlene,
Tacoma florist
Did you take Gizmo?
Lol Shannon...
Thanks so much for posting this to
my group
Yep, Shannon, that seems to be the issue.
Lori, you didn't even see the squirrels I posted just for you a week or so ago. :-p
Yes we do Lera, I made the mistake of taking the Giz to the flea market on a 90 something degree day here, she ended up crawling under one of the vendors tables in the shade an I had to crawl up under there and drag her out. She is so furry and very hot to have to carry..I won't make that mistake again.
Thanks Nana and Melinda. :)
Thanks Victoria.
Amy, if it had only been cooler it would have been perfect.
I hate to do this to you here, but I don't know if you'll see the comment I left on that pickle article and I'm anxious to get it started. You covered it, dish over dish, and I'm wondering if it can be done in a glass jar, or if you need to keep it unexposed to the light too.
The other thing I want to mention here is that I stopped comments on that article before you commented. I don't want you to think that it was because of your comment. I agree with your possible idea. The reason I stopped the comments was because Marianne's was the last straw for me. I realy didn't want to have to explain that you don't sign in and do this. I was surprised to see your comment there after I had already disallowed them. Thanks for it though.
Awesome photo essay!!!! 10+++++++++++
What would I be if I were in front or back of you? lol
Thank you Moggy !!!
I had a business trip earlier this year to Raleigh, and my wife tagged along. She went to that park and also the natural history museum. She really had fun, while I was stuck in a crummy seminar meeting.
We have a really nice Art museum too, the N.C. Museum of Art. In a couple of weeks we have our state fair too...come on back!
