The nice thing about London is it has not changed much.
There are so many things that I love about London. I do not know where to start? Connie and I first visited London 25+ years before. I have a picture of me with pidgins all over me and memories of visiting the Tower of London. I also lived in North London for about a year in the '90's. It all seems like it happened just last year?
But during our stay in London my sisters and I walked and walked.
After checking into our hotel and a short cat nap we started to walk. Our hotel was in Earls Court and we walked our way through a light snow to the West End. We walked thru Whitehall and then to Trafalgar Square and around to Leister Square. We had no plan just to get out and walk off the jet lag.
Anyway, we worked up a appetite and walked back to 'our' neighborhood and found a pub. We had the local favorites- fish and chips, beef pot pies and beer! We had a busy day planned for tomorrow so we turned in early.
The hotel we stayed in was huge by English standards, but consisted of three single beds and a very small bathroom. The best part was that we were able to have a free continental breakfast at the hotel. Then we were off to Harrods.
I love to shop about as much as I love to travel. So, Harrods was going to be a great stop. It was a short walk in the rain and we arrived before it opened and got some coffee at a shop across the street. When it opened there were many waiting outside and we all went in together.
Harrods is a magnificent store. Not just in size, but in variety of what they carry. We hit every floor and department and had lunch in the ground floor. Also, we stopped to see the memorial for Princess Diana and Dodi Al Fayed. It was after 1pm when we left the store and we had fun. But is was time to explore somewhere else.
Theresa had not been on a Double Decker Bus. So, we took one from Knightsbridge thru to the West End. Those busses are remarkable in how they speed thru the tiny streets and traffic inches from hitting each other.
We continued thru the street market and on to the Strand Hotel. The real theme of the trip was the cold. And when we got to the Strand we just wanted a warm place to sit and we also got the ambiance of its grandeur.
In the next part I'll focus on out trip north of London to Essex and the tour of our Mum's home town.
