I have a dog that grew to be a giant. He's 125 pounds and has a lot of health problems. I was paying $500. a month on average. I finally asked the vet if he had the same thing repeatedly month after month, if I could just call in and gert a prescription. The vet said no that wouldn't be ethical. I asked what options I had. He said, to put the dog down. I asked him, if that were ethical. I changed vets of course, and now have one who works with me, and the dog is better.
Tell me about it. Thank Dog Buddy's dad has a mastercard, or he'd of been toast a long time ago. Still paying off his vet bills while I pay my own med bills.
I have a question for anyone over 40. Did you have dogs when you were growing up? Did they get all the medical treatment that they say they "HAVE" to have now or they'll be sickly and die? I had 6 dogs before I was 18. Not one of them went to the vet except one of them who got hit by a car and one who fell out of a carrier and broke a leg. Not one of them was sickly. They were happy and healthy. Pet care has become such a huge consumerism-type activity and no one seems to remember the old days!
Yes, I had a dog when I was growing up and she lived to be at least 13. She did have to go to the vet though when she was just a puppy because the school bus accidentally hit her and broke her hip. Other than that though, she never had to go to the vet again.
When I was a bit older, our neighbors had dogs that were kind of shared between 3 different families because the dogs spent so much time going back and forth between the houses and IN all the houses. Never had much trouble with their health.
Terry, yes I experienced what you did. However, dogs lost their teeth, had aches we did not know about, etc. Dogs can live longer. Disease, cancer can be cured. We live in a different age. I will spend whatever I have to keep my loved one well and long.
We certainly can take better care of our pets these days with all the high tech vet services available. But sometimes folks do tend to go overboard a bit. On the other hand, to each his own.
I know all about the expenses of vet bills and many other expenses of having pets, since I have 15 rescued animals--3 big dogs and 12 cats. I spend a fortune on my pets and a lot of time on them too.
I guess the decision to start, or increase, a family applies to ALL family members, eh? Pets have become family members in a very real sense these days.
