Want To Save Money On Electricity In One Simple Step??? (No Joke)

January 04, 2009 02:03 PM EST

Do you want to save money on electricity in one simple step?

**GO UNPLUG STUFF**

**Your appliances use electricity if they are plugged in even if they're turned "off"**

That's Right!

1) Do you have a coffee maker? Are you currently brewing coffee at this exact moment? If not, go unplug it.

2) Do you have a cell phone charger? Are you currently charging your cell phone? If not, unplug the charging cord.

3) Do you have certain lamps that you rarely use? Unplug them. While you're at it, if you change the bulbs to energy efficient ones, you'll cut down on your energy use tremendously.

4) When was the last time you used your stereo/video game system/DVD player/VCR/etc.? If you're not currently using them, unplug them. They're simply wasting energy and your money by being plugged in.

5) Simply, go around the house and look for things that you can unplug. We have this horrible tendency to think that because something is "off" that it doesn't use electricity. Well, it does.

There you go, you didn't have to buy anything, change your lifestyle dramatically, etc. and you just saved yourself a bunch of money on your electricity bill (almost sounds like a Geiko commercial).

I recently had an energy audit done. I asked the guy about unplugging stuff. We have a lot of our stuff on power strips and I asked about turning those off at night, he said it really does NOT make a difference if you do that with stuff you use every day and would be annoying to do with items where you would have to reset a clock.
His BIG recommendation was changing out the light bulbs for energy effcient ones and we had already done about 1/2 of ours. Now have them all done..will see what that does to elec bill (if anything) And Hubby is insulating the attic too. Furnace has been up a bit higher tham I usually keep it during the day because Hubby and daughter have been home the last 2 weeks and they whine about being cold. I am good at 66* or 67* during the day and 63* at night...but Hubby keeps it on 68* and 65* at night if I don't catch him and scold him...LOL

You're right about everything except one: energy-efficient lightbulbs. I hate them. We do use them, but I hate them. They are like using candle light because they are so yellow and dim. As a matter of fact, I am stocking up on 200- and 250-watt lightbulbs. Pretty soon they won't be around anymore, and I need them to read at night.

We've done the light bulbs for most of our lights. We really like them. The only hard thing is with the ones in our bathroom b/c they start low and slowly brighten and are really bright by the time they are fully lit. Thanks for the info!

I think you can just plug stuff into surge protectors and flip them off. This is good especially if, like me, you get really dirty electricity; your electronics will last longer. A word about the light bulbs - the energy-efficient ones are really sensitive to power surges. I was living in a 1930's Bungalow with really old wiring, and they all burned out in a few weeks... Not a money saver.

Now that my brother moved out again the coffee pot is in storage, Packed up two lamps we did not use, Unplug the humidifer during the day as I only use it at night when I sleep. Did not think about unplugging the cell phone charger thanks for that . I unplug the toaster when not in use though. I think I will go around the house and see what else we can unplug if not being used. Great article Dan. animated teddy bear free hug

For those items with channels or timers that have to be set, yes, you can save money by unplugging everything when not in use. Just make sure that the instruction booklet is nearby for availability because you will need it everytime you plug that item back in to use it. And no, power strips don't have any function other than to expand an outlet's use to more than one plug or power surge protection. They don't have any effect on whether the 'trickle' of power (to maintain the memory of channel signals for televisions) is still available or not...the plug has to be physically removed to prevent any access to the power source. Turning off the breaker on a power strip won't do it.

How about writing our representatives to force companies to design products that do not use electricity when they are not in service.

I remember when I was a kid in the winter the B&W TV with all the tubes would take so long to warm up you could miss the beginning of a show. Part of the adjustment to the TV would be to bad it in the side ... somehow that used to work.

Great. Every clock in the house will have to be reset. I'll climb over the chairs and the sofa to reach the outlets where the lamps are plugged in. I'll try to move the bed...in an emergency I can always plug the phone back in when I get up. I'll move the washer and dryer out of their pantry and into the center of the kitchen for easier access to the outlets. Maybe we should just watch TV in the dark.

Being blonde, if I unplugged anything, I'd forget to check to see if it were plugged in if it didn't work and probably would run out to buy a new item; only then to realize I had unplugged the darn thing.... They call that a blonde moment.

Good info. My husband and I started doing this a while back and we have seen a slight difference. the computer is supposedly a big one that sucks energy when not in use. We not only shut down, but turn off the monitor and speakers. We don't unplug it just because it's too hard to get to the outlet, but we do that on many other things.

I unplug most things when I remember. Now that we're house sitting and only go home once or twice a week to check the mail and things (my inlaws are watching my house) I have unplugged everything but the fridge basically. Since I can't reach the stove and microwave outlets, we just turned their breaker's off. I can't wait to see my next electric bill.

The biggest energy saver I have found is to go to the main switch and switch off the electric water heater. With multiple people in the house it means all the hot water use needs to be at an organized time, but it saves at least $30 a month and maybe more. Using cold water in the washer saves money too and doesn't seen to make a difference on most clothes (except really oily ones.)

Hey Dan, thanks for posting this...I saw that on the news one day, and it's true. The other up side to unplugging things is: if there is a power surge, you won't take a hit & possibly destroy expensive electronics. 2 years ago we had a short power outage. Only lasted a couple of minutes before they got the emergency power on. But that sudden milisecond of power coning in, blew out the new big screen, the new bose, a small portable radio, & other small appliances..all because they wer plugged in & some were even on a surge protector" Thank God our stuff was still under warrenty & covered by ins.
10 for sharing!

Some of this information is just plain WRONG!!! Sorry, but if there is not something on the other end to complete a circuit you are NOT using electricity. My cell phone charger without the cell phone on the end of it uses 0. I have a digital meter and can check it. Sure, if you're talking about VCRs, DVD players, TVs, coffee makers with timers, etc. then yes it would reduce your consumption. But another falacy, if you turn off your power strip/surge protector trust me there is 0 electricity being used past that switch. I have an electrical engineering degree. I can prove what I say with a meter.

I, too, hate those energy efficient lightbulbs and I can't say I see any difference in my elec bill from using them. My husband put them in every socket in the house and they are so dim and don't throw much light. They're horrible to try and read a paper or book by. Yuck!

Great advice! Unplugging small appliances not only saves electricity, it could also save your life, since plugged in small appliances are a fire hazard.

This is one of those things that you know you should do but soon forget about. I did relocate the power strip for the entertainment center and now I can turn off all those electronics with one switch. The bad thing is the cable box takes forever to update the channel info after a reboot. I'm off to find the cell phone charger right now.

Great article!!!!

We have a home and a cabin and when we leave one for the other, we do just that. Go around and unplug everything except the satellite tv boxes. I am sure our bill at the house will be almost nil this month.

Thanks for the reminder, I've been trying to remember to unplug my TV and DVD player every night, but I'm still forgetting most days, I'll remember eventually though!

I am believing Cathy on this one. In the past, I have heard that unplugging things saves electricity, but someone actually just told me yesterday that was I had heard was not true and you actually don't use any electricity unless the thing has a timer or a light on it that stays on all the time.

I try to do this but I tend to forget. You can also use surge protectors and just flip the switch on them when the things aren't being used. It wil still draw energy but not as much. We do use energy saving bulbs and WOW do they make a big difference.

Yeah, I started doing that a while ago. Except for the television. I'm not going to try to get back behind it every time to plug it in. But my microwave, can opener, and lamps are always unplugged unless I'm using them.

This was the news recently and they did say most items use electricity even when not turned on. I have just started unplugging things around my house to see if it helps. I am willing to do what I can to save some money this year and pay off all of my small debts. Thanks for posting as some people have not heard this.

If one cannot afford new windows or have their attic done with insulation here are some tips. Get some silicone and caulk all you windows on the inside. You need only to put on a thin bead of caulk. Also caulk the middle of the window where the lock might be. (this would be for windows you never open) If you have enough space under the door you can slip on one of those sleeves. Check out all the doors and see if any light is coming through when they are closed. You'd be amazed at how much energy is wasted on the smallest of cracks, not to mention it will keep itsy bitzy insects from coming in that grow up to be giant ones. (but that's just me) If you have a window that gets full sun all day you might want to put up curtains that are energy wise or put up some of that stuff that people use for their cars to cut down on the sun's rays. Also, if you have window a/c units make sure there are no holes or cracks that will let the cool out and the warmth in. Keeping your a/c filters clean is very important and your dryer vents. My dryer did not seem to be putting out much air so I went outside and felt the outlet...hardly nothing was coming out! So I bought one of those dryer vent cleaners....worth its weight in gold and you can let someone else use it to. anyway...I pulled out a TON of crap. Dust balls from the 50's, an accumilation of stuff from the previous owner...I had no idea. Now that it is clean the air comes out with some force....if your dryer has to over work you are making your electric bill soar. That is my story and I am sticking to it.

...energy saving light bulbs are well worth their price. Keep the receipts. If the bulb stops working you can take it back and get your money or have it replaced....but you must have the receipt. It seems trivial but they are expensive and they come with a warranty. I put a small piece of tape with a number on it and put it on the bottom of the lamp, the numbers correspond to the receipts. It is easier to keep track of them this way.
