I have two funny stories about that - I grew up in Michigan even though I'm actually from New Mexico/Arizona and in Michigan we say "Get Down" for getting out of the car.....and when I came to Indiana they say [go figure...LOL] "Get out of the car", for getting out of the car....and the first time I went with a girlfriend to shop she was tired after a few stores and so I didn't know if she would stay in the car and wait or get down and go in with me....so I turned to her and said

"You wanna get down"......ROTFLMAO just thinking about it......

She looked up at me with a stunned look on her face and said "WHAT?!"

So like the idiot I can be at times - I repeated myself and said "Do you want to get down with me?" and she started laughing and I said "what?! Do you or not?!" and she laughed so hard she peed her pants, and went on to explain to me that to Indiana 'Get down" means to "Boogy" like in Dance.....and to me it meant anything but that!!! LOL....I'll save the other for the next post....LOL.

My second story is again a Michigan word called GARAGE. To us Michiganders "garage" means a place to get gas and fill up on candy and go to the bathrooms etc....

Well in Indiana that is called a GAS STATION [again go figure...LOL] so one day I was running low on gas and pulled over and asked a guy "Sir could you please tell me where the neartest grarage is?" and he looked at me and looked around [I was in a neighborhood area] the area and said "Take your pick" and pointed to all the house WITH actual garages!!!

I started laughing and said "NO, not that kind of garage!" And he said "Well now, seeing as you're not from around here why don't you tell me WHAT KIND OF garage you mean" and I said "where you get gas at for your car."...

And he about fell over laughing and said "little lady around here we call them GAS STATIONS! And as he hemmed and hawwed his way to telling me directions to the nearest one, I sat there looking as stupid as I felt.....LOL.

Here's one from my husband who laughed through my typing of mine.......

He said that in Wisconsin they called the Drive-In's [movies] "going to the outdoors" and he remembers one time visiting his cousins and them saying "come on we're going to the outdoors", and he said "Ok sure what part of the out doors are you going to, the back yard or the front yard or what?" and they all started laughing at him because he didn't understand that they meant the drive-in movies.....LOL.

In Pennsylvania we always called grocery carts buggies and I haven't gotten out of that habit and my boyfriend always makes fun of me when I tell him we need a buggy.

Younze is the best. Also, some people think pop is funny rather than saying soda.

I am from New Jersey and there we call it soda and here in CO they call it pop. and they call a bag a sack. it took some getting used to

Melissa, I say buggy all the time too. Drives my hubby crazy. Up here they say carriages a lot.

JF- I say pop all the time too. Once in a while I slip and say soda.

When I was in school, I had a friend that had been born in the U.S., but her family had moved to England for several years due to her father's job and had just recently returned home. One day during class, she turned and asked me for a "rubber". I didn't think I had heard right, so I asked her what she had said. She repeated it, but this time a little louder and caught the attention of the entire class, including the teacher. The teacher said that was inappropriate talk and was going to send her to the office. My friend looked really confused and said that she had made a mistake on the paper we were working on and needed to "rub it out", but the rubber had broken off the end of her pencil. She said she didn't mean for it to happen and wasn't trying to be inappropriate. The entire class, including the teacher, burst out laughing, and the teacher said that we call it an "eraser", and she could have the teacher's eraser. Later, I explained what "rubber" meant here, and she turned bright red.

That is too funny, Leah!

With all the television and movies, many of those regional differences are disappearing. Think it's a shame.
