We had the 25th Anniversary Woodstock Festival here - the fun one; Opus 40, the nationally recognized forerunner of the Earthworks art movement; Pete Seeger's sloop Clearwater winters here; Horse Shows in the Sun's 10 million dollar Olympic-class Horseshow facility is here; I could go on - but I'm glad you've heard of Saugerties now.

I'm here 24 days or so a month, traveling approximately one week a month from Jan - Oct. In Nov & Dec I'm in my open shop. My bookshop has been in Saugerties since 1985. Hope Farm was founded in 1959 - 50 years ago. It's been on the web since 1992. I'm an institution. And - yes - that keeps me constantly on the go! (thanks for noticing!)

google Budget Travel - pitch "smartest" Towns under 10,000 (or some other "word" that identifies your town) either as an inclusion in a future article, or as an article you want to write.

Congratulations, Richard. To you personally, and to the all the other folks in Saugerties as well. I hope that if I get an opportunity to visit your little village, I can time it for September so I can go to the Garlic Festival.

I've visited a few of the towns on that list, and if the others are just as cool, then I'd be happy to visit a few more the next time I get a chance. A couple of other towns I'd add to that list would be Healdsburg, Cal. and Decatur, Tex.

The largest one in the Northeast -- held the last FULL weekend in September every year -- the Hudson Valley Garlic Festival attracts 50,000 people each year. See you there?

I love the wonderful coloured sketch of your shop - it's absolutely charming. I think someday I'll do something about New York as some of my earliest relatives came from the DeVries area of Holland...Titus Syrach DeVries settled around Flatbush, NY - then on to Ohio and then on and on...to Muscatine Iowa - so when I am finished with a thousand projects, I will start on that one...and will hope you can put it in your shop. Salud

Thanks Mariana - that is a photocopy of a drawing done by a European student paying his way around the US. He drew the building my shop was in (before the telephone poles were removed) made copies, and colored them in as needed. Someone gave it to me. Really sweet. I've since moved my shop around the block to the back street. Smaller. cheaper and still in the Historic Commercial District.
