The air is cool, the sky is a brilliant blue, and I am ready for Fall!
Although fall means hunting season, and less time spent with the hubby, it also means leaf peeping, apple picking and gorgeous crisp, cool days with blue skies and wonderful views from mountain tops.
Rifle season for deer hunting in the northern zone of the Adirondacks doesn't begin until late October, so it leaves plenty of weekends to do fun fall things, and our weekends sure are filling up!
Our first "fall outing" is coming up this weekend with our 2nd annual trip to my husbands families hunting camp in Newcomb, NY, before bow hunting season begins in the Adirondacks. We went at this time last year and had such a great time enjoying the peace and quiet without all the summer vacationers out on Lake Harris that we decided to make it a yearly event, and will continue to book the last weekend at camp before hunting season begins for years to come. This year, we plan on bringing our bikes and heading up the road to the Great Camp Santanoni. We have walked up the road part way, and we have skied half of it, but we have never made it the full 5 miles in to the camp, so we thought going by bike would be a nice way to travel those miles while enjoying nature. To learn more about the Great Camp, check out the website here. The other day we are up at camp we hope to take a hike somewhere locally, perhaps to Indian Pass via the Upper Works or maybe Mount Adams. Below is a photo from last years trip made around the same time.

The following weekend (September 24th-27th) is the 37th annual Adirondack Balloon Festival in and around Glens Falls, NY. As a kid I always wanted to go this event but never did, so when my husband and I moved to Glens Falls it was a must do event. Last year the festival fell on the same weekend as out Newcomb trip so we only saw a few balloons launch on the opening night of the festival. This year I plan on going to at least one sunrise launches, and maybe one of the evening launches as well. For more information on events going on over the weekend visit the event website here. Below are a few of my favorite photos from the first year I went to the festival.

As we get into October there are many things we would like to do, but not sure we will get to all of them. One thing that is a must, and we ALWAYS do, is go apple picking with my husbands family at Hick's Apple Orchard in Granville, NY. The first year my husband and I went together was 2005, and we have been going every fall since. It's a huge orchard with many different varieties of apples to choose from, and there is nothing like picking an apple off a tree, cleaning it off on your shirt, and taking a bite into it while standing in the middle or an orchard surrounding by the fall color on the trees. Yum! And of course apple picking leads to pie making, I can't wait!

Other things we would like to do this fall...
Drive up Mt. Washington in New Hampshire while the leaves are in prime color...
Attend an Oktoberfest at one of the local breweries or mountains, like this one in Vermont...
and the other possibilities are endless...
Once October 24th rolls around it means a few weekends alone while my husband is up with the men at the hunting camp in Newcomb. While it makes for a few quiet weekends at home, the time without him also provides me with some space for doing some things I want to do, like visit my sisters, and sew until my hearts content! (Without being bothered by the hubby :-) )
What (if any) special activities do you like to do in the fall?
