Trees talk to us. They tell us where they hurt, when they are too wet or dry, and when they are dying. We don't usually hear them, but insects can. Weaker trees are more likely subject to harmful insect infestations than strong ones. The insects know when a tree's defenses are weak - probably by the sound the dissolved nutrients make flowing from the roots to the leaves. The insects hear them. Trees really do "talk".I heard a tree crying for help today. I was at a gas station putting $45 I couldn't afford into my fuel tank when I heard it clearly from about 40 feet away. While I pumped the gas I looked it over carefully to see what was wrong. I saw that years of tying big signs for cheap beer/cigaretts/soda and other death-inviting habit-forming drugs had left many nylon cords encircling the trunk and a main branch. The tree was choking to death right there in a busy intersection, and I heard it. Maybe others did also, but none stopped to save it. I could have swiped my card and closed the tank and left too, but I didn't.
I walked over to the tree and using the knife that is always hooked on my belt I cut away 3 and 4 layers of nylon rope, then carefully peeled them from the surrounding bark. I couldn't get it all off the limb without doing more damage than the rope would, but at least it isn't all the way around. There is a good chance the limb is saved. The girding trunk ropes were easier to remove. I think the tree will live.
This Arbor Day don't just plant trees - feed them, nurture them and talk to them. No, I'm not saying trees can hear you, but a comforting word is always good to hear, even if you are the only one who can.

Have you ever read Arthur Plotnik's The Urban Tree Guide? I'm reading it now, and it's fascinating. He says in the very beginning that we will never see trees or the urban landscape the same way after we learn what he has to share, and it's true. It's not a new book, but it's still available.
We all see.................some chose to REALLY SEE and do something! That is a hero in my eyes.
Thank you.
Bobbi, Miriam, Elaine - you are all too kind. I did what you would have done. But with a nursery background, a knife in my hand (and a pruning saw permanently in the trunk of my car!) I made it look easy! Thanks again
