On a message board a couple of people were getting into that familiar old timer's rant of "kids today can't sit still five minutes let alone read a novel!" My rebuttal: what about Harry Potter and Twilight? To which they could only mumble something about those being fads, that kids only read when it's popular.
What this proves then is that it's not that our kids CAN'T read--they just need the proper motivation. In other words, instead of griping on message boards, you should look for a way to encourage your kids to read books. And you know where to start? With yourself. Maybe if the kids see you reading a book, they'll want to read one too. Or if they're young, read a book to them.
There's your daily dose of common sense.

Like you said instead of sitting their complaining that a kid can't read maybe they need to help him and find out why the kid doesnt want to read.
It's possible they're only checking out videos and game discs though.
There are annual "community reads" where an entire community chooses a book to read, which might lead to conversations and discussions, which would be something else worth demonstrating.
