My friend introduced me to a great new website and I want to share it with all of my Gather friends! Although Gather is a great place to meet and talk online, how often to Gather friends meet up and hang out?
Meetup.com is a website that allows you to search for people who are interested in the same things as you, in your age range, of the same relgion or things that you want to try. You sign up for the Meetup group and they have a calendar of events to attend in your area that you can choose to attend!
I think it's a wonderful idea! Imagine meeting new friends who are interested in the same things as you! I've already joined several Judaism related groups including singles Meetups. I've joined a book club. I've joined a brunch Meetup and hiking Meetup. I've even joined a dessert Meetup! I'm excited to meet and mingle with great people in the NYC area!
Go join Meetup.com and socialize with others! You never know...you may meet a lifelong friend!

Here is an interesting fact: A similar site to Meetup.com, called "Gatheroo.com" was sued by Gather for having a name that was too similar to theirs. Gather won the case and the company was forced to change their name.
Watch out. Every time you turn around they find a new way to charge for doing things like participating in meet-ups. It was all free 3 years ago; now there are fees attached to everything except receiving their spam--and they may figure out a way to charge for that, too.
I also only get messages informing me of new meetups in my area. If you get more messages than you like, then you need to remove yourself from the meetup, or choose what notifications you want (just like Gather). You can turn off all notifications on your account settings page.
