I am an avid Vamp fan... I'm even going to eventually write a vamp book... So I was wondering:
Are Vamps overdone or just the right thing to make a GREAT story?
I'm really still in my research phase

Over the summer, I also read the first two books in the Vampire Diaries series, but the 3rd & 4th book are not in production anymore, and I'm not willing to spend a ton on them. When I got the first two, though, they had been reprinted into 1 book, so I think 3 & 4 will be as well. 1 & 2 were a brand new release at the time.
Another set I've read and liked is a series of romance novels by JR Ward. A bit of a different take on Vampires, in that they are not made, they are born. Humans can't be turned, but can mate with a vampire and produce a vampire/human offspring that may or may not turn into a vampire when they are older. There are 5 books out currently, with a 6th coming out next summer. If you like romance novels at all, you'd like these.
Then there's the series by Sherilyn Kenyon. They are also non-traditional vampires, but great books.
I've never read any of the classic or more recent "classic" vampire books- no Anne Rice, no Dracula, etc. I like my modern day vampires.
I think the best way to write a vampire novel would be to take an atypical approach- change it up a bit. There are the die hard vamp fans who will say you are writing it wrong. But what are they basing it on? Bram Stoker- a guy who wrote his novel over 100 years ago. He was the first to break into the genre, but that doesn't make him the authority on it. It's a mythical creature, it isn't something that should have set definitions or standards.
I have read some doozies that sucked. like romance authors who try to write vampire novels. They don't reach out nearly as much as vampire novels that add in romance.
I have not read any of the Sookie novels. I'll have to look for those after Christmas- are they a series, or just individual novels?
I’ll spend the day on gather, trying to see it all.
