When I was growing up, we had a pond behind our house. Actually, it was the flood waters from the creek that spilled its contents over our entire back pasture whenever we had heavy rains. Most years we were lucky enough to have a stretch of freezing weather long enough to freeze the pond for ice skating. Even though we didn't have ice skates back then, we had a great time "skating" on smooth soled shoes. This is a poem I wrote about our winter fun back when I was ten years old.
Ice Skating
Ice skating is fun in the winter time.
We stay in the pasture for a long, long time.
My dad builds a fire so nice,
And then we square dance on the ice.
After that, we roast marshmallows,
Then down the hill comes Brett, a young fellow.
Everyone has so much fun,
And then we go home when the day is done.
