(From this article regarding part of the changes in the upgrade tonight:)
o Publish to group limits - Members can publish an individual content item to no more than 250 groups. If you previously published content to even more groups and need to edit the groups you published to, you will not be able to add more groups.
While I'm curious as to whether this means they will tell you how many groups you are posting to (as opposed to abruptly stopping you from adding more groups, or even just failing out your post if you use too many groups), this means one very important thing:
It's time to cut back on your groups.
That's right. Think about it -- how many post-anywhere groups do you have? I know I have quite a few. I have a fairly high number of groups dedicated to photos, or to news articles, or to money articles, and so forth -- and this means I will have to carefully choose which of these will remain in my roster. So, I am sure, will everyone else.
The good news is, this means that many groups such as Comment Speedway and Rating Resurrectionists will develop greater community spirit -- because if you're going to be posting to only a select number of groups, any post-anything groups you post to had better be trying to help you in some way or another. This also provides an excellent motivation for moderators to work diligently on keeping things up-to-date, and means less work for these moderators, since if there is a limit to the number of groups you can post to, you might not be so quick to post to groups without checking the descriptions first.
I think I'm going to spend my evening getting some moderating done, and assuming this particular feature is implemented well, will find it helpful in saving me sanity in the future. We're at 2,465 members in Comment Speedway, and I'm thinking that with this pressure to reduce the number of groups people can use, we may just hit 2,500 members in the next two weeks -- and you know what that means. Contest time!
Anyhow, batten down your hatches, group moderators, and let's hope this upgrade means less posting of irrelevant content and more interesting and relevant content posted to our groups soon!

But, ironically enough, I usually only post to about 20 or 30 at a time.
Sometimes, I only publish to 10 groups.
That's a rather high number, so I think I'm safe.
But, I still think what they're doing is making more people leave Gather.
Because it's becoming too restrictive.
Next, they'll be limiting comments.
Of course, that is all based upon the single image Gather has provided, and I could be wrong.
well that's about 225 groups too many!
when will they get a clue?!
Seems like I see this far more here than any other site I'm a member of.
I hope however that you aren't saying we can't add in new groups to see older posts at all. I've not done it often but have gone back to some of my early early stuff and added it to go to more groups....and if I were smart would do it now too to get my old stuff seen.
Anyways, I hadn't realized that I actually belong to over two hundred fifty groups myself. Two hundred sixty-eight, to be exact.
I suppose that I could see what happens when I attempt to submit a post to two hundred fifty-one of them. Then again, that would mean placing the content into groups where it doesn't belong.
wow..that is alot!
