SIR MATTHEW THE BRAVE

I wrote this many childhood years ago for my son.  It still looks like fun, so... enjoy!

Sir Matthew Richard, my son and my heir;

What is it keeps you from climbing the stair?

Why is it up with you to bed I must trek?

Why is it under the bedstead we check?

Into the closet we peek and we search

And by the door where a robber might lurk.

In the daylight you told me just what you would do

If you ever met Bigfoot outside of the zoo.

Your cry would be frightening – your fists they would blur;

You’d tear out and feed him great hunks of his fur.

Your sword would be awful, a bright web of steel;

To protect your family, your fury he’d feel.

“And Daddy,” you said, “if a bad man came by

I’d slash with my sword, and I’d spit in his eye!”

Other than spitting, Sir Matthew my son,

I’m glad you’d face danger as if it were fun.

Your courage is legend, your deeds sung afar,

But I fear I must tell you, I see the first star.

So Sister and Kitty and Teddy and I

Will take you upstairs to bed and goodnight.

We’ll all help you search, and we’ll all tuck you in,

And Sister will kiss you goodnight with a grin.

You know that a kiss that is given with love

Will protect ‘gainst all dangers from below or above.
