I am being called the miracle man at my school these days. This is a result of some changes in a student I am working with. This is a student I wasn't even sure belonged in public school when I first began to work with him. Now though I have seen some successes I see the road ahead as full of rocks and potholes. This is a student who takes ever ounce of energy and creativity to work with. This is a student who tests me to the maximum. This is a student who regularly wears me out. This is a student who can make my heart soar with a comment made or an action done. This is a student who needs me and a student who makes me better in so many ways.
Somehow I don't see any miracle in my effort unless it be the miracle that God created in bringing us together. I always thought that miracles were created without sweat and fear. I have never been so afraid or been doused in so much cold sweat or worked harder for a student than I have with this young man. I reached a conclusion that I simply did not know what a miracle was.
I always thought that miracles were supernatural or a gift from God. Until this week I never took the time to understand what a miracle is. The New World Dictionary published in 1979 defines Miracle as a supernatural gift from God that defies logic or a remarkable event or thing to marvel at. By this definition I am not the miracle man at all, he is. My principal told me that I just seem to know how to work with these special students. I believe we all know. This student wants to be able to loved and in return be loved unconditionally in spite of himself, he wants to feel secure even when he makes mistakes. He wants to be protected from that which terrifies him even if it's himself. He wants to feel wanted. Don't we all? I wish to assure the reader that I am no miracle man. I am just someone who offers a helping hand out to those who might needs it. I am just like you. We all have opportunities to offer a helping hand out to those who need it, so that miracle men, women and children all around us can be their own miracle. May our footprints in the sand be the direct result of each of us helping others create miracles in their own lives.

I think the best thing a teacher or parent can do for a child is go lightly on mistakes and accidents. "Ooops. We won't try that again." says acceptance and you and I are both imperfect, but learning from our mistakes.
I've always told my kids that it's okay to make a mistake. If it was not, why would pencils have erasers? Would we need paper towels for wipe ups? Go ahead and try. If you miss, we'll deal together.
My mother behaved as if every mistake and accident was a tragedy. "You burned the toast! You spilled that. My carpet is stained. You are so careless! Everything is ruined... Look what you did." That sort of attitude does not make for development of healthy self-esteem.
Thank you for caring

i am still awed by you Kevin
We need more Kevin's in the school system
What you say is so true, we all want to be loved and accepted. We all want to be heard and respected. Sounds like you've extended these very things to this particular student and your actions have paid off.
