Apparently, sometime between last night and an hour or so ago, a line got clipped off of the telephone pole - not sure how, but when Laura and Angie returned from a trip to the bank, they noticed that one of the lines on the telephone pole (we have a telephone pole at the edge of our property) was dangling down around our trash cans and across the driveway.
We all took a closer look (from a safe distance - we're curious, not crazy) and after some thought decided to call up the electric company. It wasn't starting fires or anything, and I thought it might be a phone line (which would explain why its being taken down didn't affect our power or cable services - we get our phone service through our cable company now.)
The electric company told us to give 911 a call to cordon it off, which we did; not too long later, a cop came out to investigate. He said he was 'pretty sure' it wasn't hot, and moved it out of the way (with a stick - he's not crazy either) of the driveway. The electric company showed up shortly after to check the line, and verified that yes, it was indeed a Verizon line, and therefore probably not dangerous. Still not something you'd want your kids playing with, but at least not imminently dangerous.
Right now, we're trying to get Verizon to come out here - which is troublesome because we're no longer Verizon customers - and get their downed line out of our yard. Hopefully they'll be by when they say - 'tomorrow, sometime between 8 and 5'. Until then... well, if anyone actually manages to get electrocuted by it, I'd say it's natural selection at work, no?
