The Mother Goose theme sounds cool. And books always make good presents, especially for a one year old.

When they are that young, the party is often just as much for the parents. We had a blast but we spent much of it wiping ice cream from the floor, our son's face, the chairs and lots of other things. It was worth it to hear his delighted giggles :)

P.S. Plus, it is never too early to get them started reading. Try Pat the Bunny books because I really think that books which incorporate texture and words hold their interest more.

Keep it low key! He is going to have absolutely no memory of this event and if you do too much you are going to have an over-stimulated and cranky little boy on your hands. Audrey's 1st birthday party lasted an hour and a half and that was perfect she was just starting to get too tired. Personally, I think a theme will be completely lost on him and you should save up those ideas on note cards for when he is 3 and over. Though the idea of asking for books instead of toys is a wonderful one!

Where the Wild Things Are? If you don't have many Thomas the Tank Engine books, you could make it a Thomas party and ask for train-related books, too. There are millions of those.

you can do any theme you want ant still do the whole book thing.. i think your book idea is great.. my sons first birthday was Cars.. you know the movie by disney.. thats one of his favorites i think for his second birthday were going to have a Handy Many theme, well that or firetrucks.. but i think i will use your book idea.. thanks for sharing

you could make a cake that looks like a book.
for my kids birthdays i always make a special cake.we invite friends and family over.i think birthdays should be personal for kids,they should be surrounded by the people that love them.

Moother Goose is a good idea. I've been to parties where the kids get their own personal cake. It takes mom hours to wash the child's hair later, but the pictures are priceless!

I love the book theme!!! Mind if I snag your idea and use it for my son's upcoming 4th birthday? I am thinking since the kids are a bit older, they could each make their own book... That would be so easy and they would love it, coloring and drawing to their hearts content, then the adults can write the story they are telling... Oh and their book would be their party favor... Cake and crayons... That makes it EASY... LOL

Have people replace cards with books. That works out nicely. As for first birthdays I did Sesame Street and Elmo for the other one. Something that might help you get a good idea is, go where you are planning on getting the cake from. See what they got and go from there. Good luck.

MY sister did carebears for my oldest niece, but then again, that's too girlie.

The girls also like Scooby Doo- maybe a Scooby Doo theme? You can find books, movies, stuffed animals, etc. Just a thought. Maybe too hard for him to read, but its worth a try.

You can buy level books (usually sold at Meijers or Marsh) or other teaching/educational or book stores. Try Borders. It has the reader number on it. They use them in school.

Levels are as low as pre-k and infants. Infants are more harder to find, but you can find them.

You could do a "play theme", sorta like a play group, where the children can play on a playset with a slide, etc. A swimming theme if its warm for the kiddos? A skating theme? Some parents might be skeptical about this one.

You could also try Pizza King (if you have it, they have a FREE party room, you just order the food and pay 10% to waitress) and normally they have booths also with a train delivering the food. Kinda cool for kids, delivering pizza, drinks, straws on the train track. Kinda cool!
