As many of you know, we love dogs. My husband and I have always had dogs. They were always our kids.
Our first dog was an Irish Setter. He was a crazy dog. We bought him as a puppy from a breeder. Hombre' loved people. He was an excellent dog as long as we were home with him.
But when we were at work or out somewhere this dog was hell on wheels. I think they call his problem nowadays something like anxiety separation or something like that.
Hubby and I lived in a trailer when we first got together and like most couples starting out, we didn't have much and was saving for a home. We had to put Hombre' out in a dog house while we went to work. We hated doing that. And all the neighbors complained of his constant barking. Once winter came we just couldn't let him be outdoors. So, we put him in our back bedroom with some toys, food and water.
As I came down the driveway I noticed something weird about our window drapes. They looked like the Adams' Family drapes! They were shredded! I went into the trailer and the place was a mess. He tore the bedspread from the bed and chewed a big hole in the mattress. He chewed the box springs on the bottom. Then he managed to get out and created havock all over the place. He knocked down our potted plants and urinated in them. Things were torn up everywhere. When my hubby came home from work I thought he was going to kill him.
One time he ate my rosebush outside down to the ground. Never could figure out how it didn't hurt him. And one time we treated ourselves to some steaks to put on the grill. We went out to fire up the grill and when we came back in the steaks were gone from the counter. Hombre' was in the back bedroom trying to crawl under the bed. He was too big and couldn't hide under it. What a dog!!!
As years went by and flunking a training class, Hombre' went with us when we bought our house. He was now older, but we still couldn't trust him being alone and free in the home. We made a little area in the basement for him so that he couldn't get in any trouble or get hurt. It was a relief for us. We loved him alot and never gave up on him. He was our kid. He was so well behaved and fun when we were together. All our friends and the kids loved him, too. He was the best ball player.
He has long been gone, but not forgotten. We have since had two chocolate labs and two Golden Retrievers. As you can see from my icon, Rocky is a Golden and the best.
Here's an old photo of Hombre'.
