We know that parenting is one of the toughest jobs out there, so here are a few easy ways to be a green parent. For more, check out Baby Center's Green Parenting article here.

Rethink the baby wipes - They're definitely not eco-friendly as most baby wipes take centuries to biodegrade. Switch to washcloths instead.

Have a kid swap party - Don't buy more clothes or toys, host a kid swap party and swap toys and clothes with other parents

Kids have got to be the most un-green things there are aside from Hummers. It's so hard to use less stuff with kids in the house. Diapers, paper towels, wipes, wasted food, toys...it's not easy being green with a baby in the house.

My wife has been good about recycling toys and clothes.

I have to admit, that title caught my eye! I have (somewhere, I'll find it) a recipe for making your own baby wipes. There are also places that sell natural baby shampoos, (no, regular baby shampoo is NOT natural at all), diapers and various other things. One such place and it's on the net, is called www.seventhgeneration.com, another is www.drbronner.com (natural soap). There are others out there - MANY others, as lots of people do care about these things.
We always swapped clothing and toys - another place to go and I bet people have them, and don't even know it, (check with your local Human Services Dept) are free clothing rooms that also have toys. People donate... a lot.

marilyn, seventhgeneration is good! Another good company is Method, they sell their products at Target & Lowes. Not baby products, but still green and much better than putting chemicals into your home.
Being green & natural is a growing industry, and that's a good thing! I believe that many of the things we do/put on/into our bodies causes cancer & we need to be informed.

Joseph - Your right! having babies, children is so very wasteful. It is good to think of any ways you can to avoid being so wasteful. Recycle toys, clothes. Try to save food for another feeding, or even just making your own. You know that babies do NOT need to eat that Gerber stuff they sell in the stores right? You can easily mash your own banana & it will be without the preservatives as well!

I donate and/or give away all my kids clothes to those in need. I never ask for anything because I know what it means to be unable to provide the things you want/need for a baby. It is not fun.

As for babywipes I think there is a brand that is biodegradable out there, you just have to look and pay extra for them.

It is worth it to pay extra if the option is available. If it takes so long to break down in the environment, how is it affecting your baby? They absorb so many of the chemicals that we put on them. That's why it's even more important to be organic with your baby, more than any other time of their lives. They absorb the pesticides, herbicides, etc. It doesn't matter if you wash your fruit & veggies, those chemical have grown into the product.

I will admit that my baby definitely isn't green. We have a very limited budget, and we get a lot of stuff for almost no money, or we do some product testing and get it for free.

I have two boys so I the youngest wear a lot of clothes from my oldest, and my oldest wore a lot of hand me downs, as do our youngest. We also do a lot of freecycling with toys and books, and the books we haven't gotten through freecycle or received as gifts we find at thrift stores or on library sales.

Green no - but we do our best with what we've got.

I try to do this, my kid lives in hand me downs, we use an all natural Purell type hand sanitizer all the time, and someone else mentioned Method cleaning products - those are good!!!

I'd like to add the concept of baby pottying to this discussion. EC or Elimination Communication is a way of REDUCING your diaper use gradually - perhaps the most sustainable approach when combined with modern cloth and eco disposables (I use both) We of course save a heap of money and the eco-karma is fabulous. Just one less diaper at a time - it's going green with your baby, even when they are wearing diapers all the time between potty visits.

I developed biodegradable and eco-friendly baby wipes because I knew that most baby wipes are damaging to the environment, as they do not biodegrade or they are made of tree pulp - contributing to deforestation around the world.
