When we knew we were going to Canada, my husband decided that he really would like to stay on a lake. I agreed and set about finding us the best place we could find, that wasn't hours away from Winnipeg. I knew we would be driving to Winnipeg each day, to take in some sights, so I didn't want to drive too far.
Gimli was it. Lake Winnipeg is the 11th largest fresh-water lake in the world. When you see North America on the news every day for the weather - the lake you see in Canada, directly above Minnesota in Lake Winnipeg.
It really is a huge lake. Where we were at in Gimli, we could barely see one area of shore across from it. The rest just looked like the ocean, minus the waves.

The welcome sign. Gimli is about an hour north of Winnipeg.

Our first view of Lake Winnipeg. It is hard for me to not think of it as the ocean, it was so big!

The sign at the Main Dock, which is where they have a large marina.

This is the Famous Gimli Pure Artesian Water. I had never heard of it before I got there, but I gamely tasted it. It had a metallic taste, but was very cold & fresh.

There was this huge dock like area, with this large seawall on it. There were murals painted all along it. The wall was so high though, that no one could see over it. Although some people did drop a fishing line over the wall to try their luck.

A view of the marina of boats.

There was only 1 boat out on the water, this sailboar. Although the water was not very windy, so I was surprised there were not more people out.

We saw this huge airplane while we were walking around town. This is right by the Viking Museum.

This is the hotel we stayed at. I was not impressed at all. In fact, we only spent 1 night there, instead of the planned 3. The next day we decided to spend the remainder of our time at a hotel in Winnipeg. The toliet was hugely loud & they did not have a room with 2 beds, as we had previously thought. Only 1 bed with a pullout couch that was very uncomfortable. This is the only hotel in town though. There was also a motel available.

A pretty sign on the beach.

I saw this mural painted on the side of a building when we went for a walk. Loved it!

The sunrise from the balconey at our hotel room. We had storms during the night & early morning, then it cleared to a lovely day.
Gimli was a very touristy town we felt. It was also COVERED in May flies (didn't they know it was July?). We enjoyed walking around the evening we were there, but ended up being happier in Winnipeg with more to do around us.
