This summer, I plan to make the library near the new house a regular stop. It's within walking or biking distance, so I fully intend to get a decent amount of use out of going there. I'm hoping they will have (as most do) a summer reading program.
I also intend to have the kids take part in the summer reading program at Barnes & Noble- if they read 8 books, they get to "buy" a free book from a B&N. They can do this simultaneously, so they may be able to get double the rewards for reading.
I also found out about a program today that Sylvan runs called Book Adventure, http://bookadventure.org/
Apparently, you pick books from a list, read them, then answer a quiz on the book for points. The points are cashable for things like bookmarks, e-books, Highlights subscriptions, temporary tattoos, and other assorted things.
I'm excited- I think the kids will enjoy taking part in these various programs, and earning fun prizes! I'm considering adding a small prize if they finish a certain amount of books, or if they read 1 book they get a special snack or something.
My kids are avid readers to begin with, so I think this will just be fun.

I'll suggest "The Phantom Tollbooth" and "Un Lun Dun" for young readers with big imaginations.
My youngest can only read or spell a few words on her own, so I'm planning to help read to her, and try to teach her a few more words.
