Woohoo!!!! I've been trying to get my hands on a copy of this book for a long time, and tonight I won one on eBay. I read it years ago, and I've wanted to read it again. This is absolutely great!!!!
The below paragraph is taking from the auction site book description.
MRS MAN
BY UNA STANNARD
JUST AS ZEUS SWALLOWED HIS FIRST WIFE WHEN SHE BECAME PREGNANT AND CARRIED THE BABY TO TERM HIMSELF, SO MEN CREATED A SOCIETY IN WHICH WOMEN COULD NOT GET FOOD, CLOTHING, AND SHELTER UNLESS THEY BECAME MAN'S WOMB. THIS IS ONE OF THE STARLING THEORIES SET FORTH IN MRS MAN - THAT IT WAS MAN'S INTENSE DESIRE TO ACQUIRE THE REPRODUCTIVE PART HE LACKED THAT MADE HIM REDUCE WOMAN FROM AN INDEPENDENT BEING TO A WIFE, THE SEX HE SAID WAS CREATED TO SERVE AS HIS WOMB, BEAR HIS CHILDREN.
DRAWING FROM SUCH DIVERSE SOURCES AS MYTH, EMBRYOLOGY AND EARLY CHRISTINA WRITINGS, MRS MAN DEMONSTRATES THAT WHAT REDUCED WOMAN TO MAN'S WOMB WAS THE ERRONEOUS BELIEF SEMEN ALONE GENERATED LIFE, LIFE WOMAN MERELY NATURED, A BELIEF DISPROVED ONLY 100 YEARS AGO AND STILL EMBEDDED IN OUR CUSTOMS, LAWS AND LANGUAGE.
VECAUSE WE DID NOT KNOW THE TRUE FACTS OF LIFE CHILDREN WERE GIVEN THE SURNAME OF THE FATHER AND WOMEN BECAME MRS MAN. BY FOCUSING ON SOCIETY'S REQUIREMENT THAT WIVES TAKE THE NAME OF THEIR HUSBAD, MRS MAN MAKES PAINFULL CLEAR THE PRISON OF WIFEHOOD. FOR MOST OF HISTORY WOMEN COULD HAVE NO OTHER IDENTITY BUT WIFE. EVEN ACTRESSES, THE FIRST WOMEN WHO HAD ANOTHER PROFESSION, USED TO CHANGE THEIR STAGE NAME WITH EVERY HUSBAND. THE FEW WOMEN WHO ACHIEVED ANOTHER IDENTY FELT GUILTY - A JOURNALIST AS WELL KNOWN AS DOROTHY THOMPSON YEARNED TO BE "SWALLOWED UP" BY HER HUSBAND AND FOR A WHILE PUBLISHED AS "MRS SINCLAIR LEWIS." THE HANDFUL OF HEROIC WOMAN WHO DARED KEEP THEIR OWN IDENTITY AFTER MARRIAGE HAD TO ENDURE THE OUTRAGE OF CONVENTIONAL WIVES AND THE WRATH OF JUDGES WHO, AS LATE AS THE 1970S, COMPARED THEM TO WHORES AND DEPRIVED THEM OF THE RIGHT TO VOTE.
WE NEVER TIRE OF REPEATING "WHAT'S IN A NAME?" BUT THE NAMES MARRIED WOMEN USED REVEAL THE POWERFUL UNCONSICIOUS DRIVES AND TRAGIC WASTE OF MAN AND WOMANKIND. MRS MAN IS AN ORIGINAL, PROFOUND AND DEEPLY MOVING BOOK, WRITTEN WITH DISPASSIONATE CALM, WITH AND HUMOR.
THIS BOOK LOOKS BRAND NEW ~ ADDITION PHOTO'S AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. IT WOULD MAKE A GREAT GIFT FOR ANY BOOK LOVER. SHIPPING IS A LITTLE MORE EXPENSIVE DUE TO THE WEIGHT OF A QUALITY HARDBACK NOVEL.

The graphic on the cover says it all. It was after reading this book that I decided if I ever got married i would keep my own name.

Thank you for the book review, it sounds like a good read and WOO HOO for winning it.
if you want to break down traditions and silly conventions
that would be a big one
why marry if it allows men rights and especially to own women and abuse them
names have nothing to do with it
it is the whole establishment theme
own , belong
still i praise your choice
wow!!!
why did you get married ??
what is the point of marriage anyway `??i am all ears
Walker's and my marriage is one of total equality. Sure we have different strengths and weaknesses, but that's because we are specifically WALKER AND LEAH, not because we are man and woman. We are who we are, and as such, having the same values, we were attracted to eachother.
.
Personally I had no problem with taking my husband's last name. It just makes everything so much easier. I'm still able to maintain my own identity, even if my last name is different now. My family is pretty traditional anyway, though.
I think it's great when people choose to keep their last name, though, if that's what they want to do. It's all about choices, and I don't think anyone should be able to say that it's right or wrong for someone to keep their last name, or change it.
MERRY CHRISTMAS!

mrs man sounds quite interesting, but i don't think i could read it w/o becoming VERY UPSET! i was becoming a young, INDEPENDENT woman during the "BURN-THE-BRA" era. i was also a FEMINIST...& @ age 57 i still am. i've been married twice, taking my husband's name each time. but when the marriages were over i resumed my maiden name (i have no children). anything that even hints of female subordination illicits a big negative response from me.
i'll remember this book...someday i'd really like to read it, but now is not the time!
