I captured a beautiful caterpillar when I was 7 or 8, and I can still see its bright yellow and black rings. I never wanted it to change. Some caterpillars are so beautiful, and some butterflies are no more than moths.

Ah, but change is inevitable, though it's true you can find beauty in the beginnings as well as the end.

My point was that sometimes there is far more beauty in beginnings than anything that ever comes after that, but that's just as obvious as change being inevitable. :)

I always grow dill or parseley or fennel for the swallowtail babies to nibble. Dill is terrific because it's tall and you can watch those fat little striped caterpillars getting bigger and bigger. They use the oil of dill to make a foul odor that deeply discourages hungry birds.

The tall milkweeds are another plant that makes a great nibble-nursery: the monarch caterpillars eat that.
