The rain's about to start and you must stay dry

I don't want to trip and fall on them today

 

Penny Elaine, stop pickin' on your brother

Do your homework and stop being such a bother

Penny Elaine, do your chores today

And don't mimic me at everything I say

 

Penny Elaine, don't stay out too late

Or I'll change your curfew from ten to eight

Penny Elaine, please get off the phone

You're Grandma's here, don't leave her alone

 

Penny Elaine, I never thought I'd see the day

That you'd graduate next Sunday in May

Penny Elaine, the lovely girl you are

Never caused me any grief, and you'll go far

It is really great practice for being a grandma. You remember how sometimes your mom and her mom would share "one-a-them" smiles across the table? You just knew your mom had just said something that HER mom said to her when she was the babe.

And isn't that the most wonderful job in the world? Something holy about being a mom and nurturing another one through.

Wow, Beth, what a great piece you pulled together here. The same blindness and goes into the unfortunate pattern of picking others (expecially ones child) is in play with the selective memory that goes with facing transition and saying "goodbye". Such a pattern, so common, (too familiar in my own behavior) is no way to live. Attempting the "making of a perfect child" is a lousy parent sport, and such a waste of potential for real relationship and real nurturing. Transition to another way might just allow avoiding the need for delusion about the job we have done, after our caregiving years are ended. nWe don't own our children, they are entrusted to our care. In how many ways, have I failed to be caring?

Wow great feedback David. I think what I was trying to accomplish here is how selective memories can be. Some people choose to remember how they were chastised all the time, and some people can only express their care by reprimand, and have a difficult time praising someone they love.
