Geotagging is to let people know where in the world a photo was taken. That's fine for building and fairs and lovely river spots, etc. People aren't thinking, and I've seen some photos of children Geotagged!
I have been using the Geotagging and even with some pictures of my kids, but it is just generalized. I am not putting in an address. And we travel so much that half the pictures are taken at a location no where near where we live.
Thomas: One of the new Gather features is Geotagging, which is basically putting a map under your photo so people know exactly where the photo was taken. It's a rather cool idea (although I could do without the huge map under the photo) and was basically designed for noting where landmarks and certain buildings are.
In fact, here at CMU, a PhD has developed a way to identify where in the world a photo was taken based on Geotagged photos posted on the internet.
I'm concerned with parents Geotagging photos of their kids without thinking.
Juley: That's fine as long as it's a vacation spot. I'm just a little concerned with people who might Geotag their own neighborhood. And if someone wants to find a child, they have a general area and a photo ... ? Just don't tag anywhere near your home, okay?
I definitely hope that people see your reminder, Barbara... really, I think Gather should put a note right there on that section of the Photos page... preferably as they collapse it so that those of us who are not the least bit interested in using it can skip it entirely
I agree with that, flit -- an option to collapse would be very sensible. Right now it's just one more thing causing pages to take forever to load (esp. with lots of comments).

I have been Geotagging photos taken at public parks and other public events. Someone might want to know where to find the fountain or the cave we explored. It's not like we live there.
I will not Geotag my home address though unless it's a private article published to people I trust.
I think if people stick to vacation spots and public buildings, it will be okay. I haven't uploaded anything since the upgrade, so I have no idea how easy it is to do.
One should also think about tagging public places too. Think about it, if you tag places in the same area you live, frequently. . . it would not be hard for a predator to make a guess to where about in the city you are (i.e. if you're tagging the same park, the same restaurants and so on) Good idea to tag anything long distance seen in trips, bad thing to tag anything local. Just my own thoughts :)
Heather: For photos with kids, yes, you're probably right. But if you're just talking about photos of local buildings, I don't think that would cause problems...
I have to agree...geotag is great for vacation, scenic views, buildings and such. but not for kids...or pets for that matter. Pets are coming up stolen in my area. They are being used as bait dogs to fight with. You have stalkers as well phedopiles online checking the Geotag out.
