If ever you get the opportunity to visit Sydney you must put aside a day to take one of the best commuter rides in the World. Sydney's 4 million people are spread north, south and west of Sydney Harbour, but it is those lucky citizen who live on the Northern Beaches Peninsula beginning at Manly who travel to the city via this long ferry ride or by comparitively boring bus!
This journey travels along the eastern length of Sydney Harbour and even across the heads. Indeed, it does not run in really rough weather! (believe it or not, in storms you can surf within the harbour at beaches adjacent to the heads!) It passes some of the most expensive and picturesque real estate in the country, although this is "watered down" a little by the growing presence of unit towers etc, Sydney was once a land of 1/4 acre block houses. Not so much any more! For my money though, it is the mosaic/collage, almost impressionistic looking houses leaving the foreshores going up the hills amid the taller units in the Eastern suburbs that captures me every time. You cannot see it in these photos, too small a camera, you'll have to come and look for yourself!
To find the Ferry Terminus simply catch a train to Circular Quay. The ferries are right there and they go all over the harbour, even Taronga Zoo! My favourite is the Manly Ferry! Partly the journey and partly arriving at Manly. The Manly Corso as it is known, is a pedestrian only strip of restaurants, cafes, shops, and some of Sydney's best late night party pubs! The ferries finnish at Midnight so don't get stuck unless you are prepared to party until 6am or so when they begin again.
Manly beach is where surfing apparently began in Australia. There are a couple of stories of it's introduction but I like the big "Dane" Hawaiian riding the strange plank at the beach that everyone wanted to try! The surf beach is about 500m from the ferry, straight through The Corso! Or there is a safe harbour beach for the kids! SAFE: Sharks breed in harbours! Many attacks have occured in the past well inside Sydney Harbour! Manly is adjacent north head! A Navy diver was even attacked recently on a training exercise in the harbour itself!
In these shots I have travelled to Manly already and am returning from Manly to Circular Quay on a mid-winter's afternoon about 3.30pm. The ferries run every 30 minutes, don't miss it on a visit to Sydney! Oh, the other side of the boat is just as spectacular!
Anyway, I hope that you enjoy the photos!

This is a wonderfully informative article!
SYDNEY HARBOUR'S MANLY FERRY-MANLY TO CIRCULAR QUAY LEG LOOKING SOUTH WITH A PHONE CAM...
What a great title!! As Group Moderator, and on behalf of Kathline Gore, Group Owner, I have featured this @ BARB L.
Thankyou very much for your kind words! If I had 1 day only in Sydney I'd ride this ferry, then tour and have lunch in The Rocks where Sydney Colony began and grew. It is just to the right of the ferry docks at Circular Quay where the Harbour Bridge access now runs. That access route took a lot of The Rocks (by then a slum) in the 1930's! Today the area is a treasure!
Fabulous photos! A must-see!!!
Nice short story.
