This year has been very difficult for my family. We have lost friends and gained friends, we have gone through job loss, almost losing our home, and not being able to afford to have a traditional Thanksgiving of our own. So, with Christmas approaching, I realized that I needed to have a talk with my children.
When I was on my way to my dad's house to help him with a few things, I decided to talk to my 10 year old alone. I assumed having 4 older siblings, they would have ruined the whole Santa Clause aspect for her so, I expected to not to have to say too much. But, I was wrong.
I said, "Do you know about Santa?" She said that she knew all about Santa. So, I asked what exactly is it that you know? She replied by telling me the story of Santa and his job on Christmas Eve. So, I asked her, "You still believe in Santa?"
She told me, "of coarse!" in a tone that made me feel like I was crazy. I fought with myself and decided that I did not have the guts, nor was I that cruel to take the belief away from my daughter...no matter what.
I told her that it was people like her who keep Christmas alive through believing. She then had to educate me on this aspect.
She had to explain to me that Santa was just like God in that "We may not be able to see them, but they are there. But, the only thing is...you must believe."
My daughter is mature beyond her 10 years and served as a reminder to me that I too just have to have faith and believe that something will come through.
No matter what the circumstance, a simple reminder that the whole reason for Christmas begins with the aspect of a poor couple who there was no room at the Inn for. They made it through, and so will we.
I hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas!
