I've yet to actually get it up on the wall, but a few weeks ago I finished painting another shelf. (Upon which I shall display more model horses, of course!) It turned out really nice, and since I took pictures of each of the stages, I figured I'd share them!
The shelf started out as just plain wood.

I started the project by choosing a color scheme... blues! So I painted on the base. I tend to use a lot of different shades for this stage-- I'd rather have multifaceted colors than just one solid shade.

After that, it was time to start painting the details. Of course, I went with swirls... as usual.

After I had the basic swirls done, I felt it needed more. Originally I had told myself that I wouldn't do any tiny, painstaking sort of details on this shelf... but then I got upset about something one night, and started working on the shelf again, and in my fury-enhanced (haha!) mindset, I had started doing teeny dots.

It took a while, I'd do a little bit every now and then... Also, the edges of the shelf were painted black, with silver swirls. You can sort of see them on the left edge of the shelf in the photo below.

Eventually, the whole thing was done. Woohoo! The final result made me quite happy!

What a terrific idea! I have a phobia about hanging shelves on the wall-- I can just see myself doing a poor job and everything coming crashing down on someone's head eventually-- but if I ever break through that fear, I'll have to do something like this. Especially in the kid's room.
It's beautiful! i love doing swirls too, They're just so fun!
This looks great Tory, and I love the colors and the pattern.
WOw...I like...adds color where you don't usually see it...and I like that you used different blues while painting the base layer...cool ...I'm a swirly type of gal too

Nicely done. This is a great photo essay and encouraging for someone who would like to try this. Thank you.
It's beautiful, I'm glad you added the little dots, they really made it look better.
Nicely done Tory!
It is really pretty Tory - you did a nice job
Very creative!!!
Beautiful!!! I'm glad you added the dots!!
Very cool, Tory - I like the dots and I like that you used different blues in your base. I don't have the patience for that kind of thing. I'd probably destroy it in a temper tantrum:)
