I decided I was feeling brave (or was it stupid?) and wanted to try to draw and paint it. Human figures are what I most want to draw, but struggle the most with. Therefore this is a big challenge for me - on many levels. Despite that I've gone ahead and tried.
My first sketch of this is now erased. I should have taken a photo of it, but oh well. It was out of proportion and too small, so I wound up having to use the grid to aid in proportions.

I went to work redrawing it with the grid and was surprised just how off the first draft's proportions were off. I had her feet above the middle line! I'm having a great deal of trouble on the have twisted shoulders and the hands. Hands have always been hard for me along with faces, and this is drawn on a lumpy, bumpy canvas board, so that makes things a bit harder as well.

I went to work and kept trying to work on it. I'm having a great deal of trouble on the half twisted shoulders and the hands still. I've added some shadows in and a 'placeholder' sketch for the hands. I'll have to work on getting them donewith better detail, but now I know the basic placement and gesture they'll be in.

I see a lot in need of work, but it's a start...

Thanks Christy. I am too as well as nervous. I've always struggled with human forms. :(
Maybe things will change now that I'm coming back to it after many years away.
Thanks for posting this to BEST ORIGINAL PHOTOS,ART AND WRITING FOR 2008.
You're welcome Marilyn.
I'm pleasantly AMAZED at what you've done on this so far.
I'd give all of your "first tries" a serious look. They have all been excellent! All the Fine Arts Masters have "first tries", and they may not look as good as yours Jen! . . .
This will be a wonderful journey for you with this new project. I'm EXCITED about it!
"Trunk Up" also means PROSPERITY.

Thanks for posting to Gather for Art.
Thanks for posting to All Photo Essays Here.
Thanks JR I HOPE it is... or I'm gonna cry. LOL
Rene, dear friend, thank you so much for your kind words of support. Normally I think I would have passed up this picture to draw due to my known weak areas in art (Humans, hands, faces, shadows) but for some reason I was drawn to it. I blindly followed that pull and here I am. I'm feeling a bit lost, but seeing improvements. (You should have seen the mistakes on her chest! LOL They were, uh funny.)
My inner perfectionist kind of makes my first tries a bit more serious than maybe they should be, but I guess there's a good side and bad side to that.
Indeed it will be a wonderful, if not HUMOROUS journey from start to finish. I'll be sure to catalog some of the sillier mistakes... maybe if I LAUGH inner critic will back off and think I'm not taking it too seriously. ;-)
Prosperity. *smiles* Nice meaning.
Lisa I believe that everyone can draw. It's just a matter of following the lines you see every day in nature. I will most certainly keep you updated on the progress. :)
Me too Amanda. I took a day off from working on it, though. So no new updates today, LOL.
Thank you Marianne! Aww I'd LOVE to see your stick figures. :)
LOL Ellie. I'm a glutton for punishment. I write AND draw.
Thanks KC
Sammie, I try not to use the grids, but this one is such a small reference photo - about 12 inches.. a bit less and the canvas version is 16 X 20! So I wound up needing it for the size issues and poor quality of the photo! I can't wait to see it finished either.
Thanks Victoria!
Laya no I haven't but it's on my list. Here's a little secret I've kept under wraps. This painting is to go side-by-side for a novel I hope to write in November. I'm doing prelim research now, and found this image in one of my research materials. :)
That's awesome
