from unemployment. They said 10-14 days. 14 days will be Monday. I really hope he gets unemployment because i will never find a job that pays as much as he made. He won't be able to either- not now.
He speaks to a few people from work and has learned that this past week they fired 6 more people, all without cause, plus 3 others in the past few weeks. There was also talk of closing down their plant the week of Christmas, or possibly all of December. Hundreds of people work there- and they all might have to tell their kids there will be no Christmas this year. Or at least a much lesser holiday than they are used to. At least that makes it obvious that the company is having some money issues. What I don't understand is why they are firing these people instead of laying them off. Most of those people didn't do anything wrong. Jason said one of them was a low guy on the pole but in two years never missed a day. Instead of saying, "Hey guy, you are a great worker but we are short on work and need to lay you off" they escort him off the property and tell him not to reapply. This also happened to reliable people who were about to retire. People who have been there 20-30 years.
This is one of the most successful printing companies in our area. There are a handful of printing companies in the county but none of them do the same thing this one does, so they keep their business. It is really scary to see this company doing this bad. It has never been this bad there. Not in the 6 years Jason worked there and never before.
If Jason's claim is approved he will be able to look for a job and go back to school without us having to worry. If it doesn't then we are seriously screwed. We will lose everything. We saved a lot of our tax return this year because we always have some trouble in the winter so our funds will get us through this week of no income. And the $50 a week I get from sitting will help right now too. I am just really hoping it all works out for the best.
This is just so stressful.
My mom was approved for the unemployment extension but it will be almost 1/4 of what she was making when she was working as a massage therapist. She is barely getting by as it is. She might lose her house. This was her very first house and she only got it about 2 years ago. She even did it the right way- she didn't buy more than she could afford and got a good, fixed interest rate. But she didn't know that her boss at the school didn't like her and was planning to fire her. The sad thing is that my mom was the hardest working person they could have hoped for. She would never call off work unless she was in the hospital, her car broke down or there was a family emergency. Sick doesn't matter to her- that isn't an excuse. She even does things that aren't part of her job description if she is asked, just because she believes that you report directly to your supervisor and never deviate from what they ask of you. In addition to the boss not liking her (mainly because the students complained about her- how dare she make them work hard and pass tests and do the classwork), she was the highest paid employee. Everyone else knew she was getting fired before she did which is really rude. She learned later that the other people who were fired were the other highest paid workers and were also the best employees- according to her standards. She was fuming mad that the teacher who let the students talk dirty to each other while practicing massage kept her job...because the students liked her. She was always talking to me about how wrong it was that they were in school for a serious profession and were joking about it. If they ever made the mistake of doing that in a real job they would risk sexual harassment suits, would put the entire company they work for in jeopardy and would lose their job. It upset her that almost no one took it seriously. People always joke about massage therapists and what they do but when you go to school for it you take an oath to be respectful of that work and not make it into a sexual issue.
Anyway, just rambling and ranting. It is a nice day in PA. I should be happier.

I will hope and pray for teh best for you, I know this is not a good time to be out of work, and my husband has mentioned that he wants to look for a new job, if it came down to it, I'd rather find a part time job 3rd shift and work that to bring in extra money, if I could sell some photos that would be great, but its a tough market out there,
I hope and pray for teh best for you
And I'm sure that the unemployment office is currently flooded with calls. and claims
Mooch
I had no idea Mari!! That is awful! Recently they implemented a point system so if anyone is late even 1 minute they get the same amount of points they would if they called off sick. They don't even care the reason anymore- if your wife had a baby and you were in the hospital with her I get the impression that they would have handed out the points with a smile. But then they decided to ignore the point system and fired at-will, which is allowed in PA. They don't need any reason at all to fire, as long as it isn't a form of discrimination. Sad thing is that their salaried employees, the supervisors, are on the same schedule as the regulars and were supposed to show up at the start of their shifts but would come in whenever they wanted-5-10 minutes late.
Jason mentioned that he brought up the issue of where they put him to work because they work with strong inks and they moved him to a room with no ventilation. He told them it was difficult to work in and they said they were "planning" on installing a system there but instead gave him a fan that just blew the smell right into his face. I went in there once and had to leave because I thought I would die. AND he mentioned to me on two occassions that one of the other employees consistently harassed him. I don't know the details but he is really really ready to fight if they want to deny him!
