"Plan for Change" is a two-minute advertisement in which Senator Obama will speak directly to the nation on his view of the state of the economy and what he will do to fix it when he is elected president.
You should have a telethon for the wealthy. I spend my time worrying about the 95% of Americans that are suffering and paying the price for failed policy.
I am still undecided here. I just do not trust any one in politics. Why haven’t either of these two complained (as Senators) and before running for the office of President? They were both in positions to raise hell about what was happening to our country, but they didn't. WHY? That is the question I want answered.
So in your world thousands upon thousands of dollars of tax cuts for the rich are called tax cuts but a tax cut for the middle class is called a giveaway
Fred I saw this the minute you posted before there was one comment but felt that saying anything bad wouldn't be nice at all. Mom always said if I couldn't say anything nice not to say it so I didn't. And you know I've got to listen to my Momma.
Like Kay said above "Who's going to pay for the $1000 tax credit??" Or better yet, how is it going to get paid??
Esther"Like Kay said above "Who's going to pay for the $1000 tax credit??" Or better yet, how is it going to get paid??"
Esther you're paying attention the the wrong Kay. Try me. I'll give you facts instead of one liners.Senator Obama is referring to tax cuts. Tax Plans Fact Check
I already heard this on Rush Limbaugh and his disection of what he calls the Messiah Message with no real solutions, only blame...as usual Appreciate the message though
Kay M: The "evil" rich pay 70 percent of the total taxes, do you want them to pay for 100 percent? Also, who do you think employs people in this country? You will find out when the same "evil" rich stops hiring. I do not believe in class warfare, sorry.
Russell- The $1000 that Obama makes reference to is a tax cut. Listen again. He says "reform our tax system to give a $1000 tax Cut to the middle class"
The Tax Policy Center has done an analysis of both Obama and McCain's tax plan. You can go there and see it for yourself. Or you can go to the link I've posted twice in that thread in which I have simplified info from the Tax Policy Center and listed the cuts by income.
We were supposed to be there to get Bin Laden and Bush decided to forget about that mission. By going back we hopefully find Bin Laden and finish what the American people wanted before greed and vengenece blocked the mind of the President.
Russell, McCain was joking about that figure and Kay M knows it. McCain's point is that you cannot expect to tax people to death and expect the economy to grow.
Kay M, I agree. The policy of trying put everyone in a home regardless of their credit standing is now coming back to bite us. Until 2008, we have seen the most growth with the lowest unemployment. Were you complaining when unemployment was at 4.5% and the consumer was buying everything in sight? By the way, that was in 2007.
You wouldn't know would you? I don't think you have any genuine interest in knowing. I'm done with you. You don't deal in fact. You just seem to love to see your icon all over a thread.
This is great. Not that the GOP supporters with their head in the sand [among other places] will even give a listen to it. They will continue their downward economic slide, raising their hands in homage to jesus and war, until this country is bankrupt.
I was speaking to one of our financial advisors the other day on the phone; he's in the next state over from us. I don't usually talk politics, but he kept asking me my opinion about the candidates. We both agreed that we are fiscal conservatives and social liberals. One thing I pointed out to him was that in the past 1-1/2 yrs with a slight Dem majority in Congress and a Rep president, NOTHING has gotten done. It's been a political circus, with grandstanding, lights out speeches, mud-slinging,etc. It looks more like children in a sandbox than leaders of the greatest nation in the world [or at least it used to be].
If, I pointed out, we have even more of a Dem majority in Congress after November [and all polls point to the Dems picking up more seats], and we have a Bush-clone in the WH again, what is going to get done? NOTHING. If, however, we have a Dem in the WH - who is intelligent and has proven that he wants to reach across party lines, and a majority of Dems in Congress, maybe, just maybe, we'll get some work done in Washington.
He's now sworn to vote for Obama. And for all you GOP'ers who think McCain/Palin are going deliver you to the Kingdom of Heaven on earth.....what you're going to see if more in-fighting, even less work, and the eventual collapse of our country in the next four years. Think about it. The executive has proven in the past that they can get things done if they work in concert with Congress - no body is going to be able to pass anything radical. But, we may actually be able to compromise if there is a true leader, one with a brain and a vision, one who will not stoop continuously to mud-slinging [as we have seen McCain do, even having Karl Rove say that he has overstepped his boundaries!], and we will come back together and work to get things accomplished.
Whatever happened to fiscally prudent Republicans?
The Republicans have become a far more theological, faith-directed party; they are no longer fiscal conservatives as evidenced by the deficit, declining personal income, and failed economic policy that has ravaged middle america for the past 8 years. We are facing the biggest financial crisis in my lifetime, and I'm no spring chicken.
The Outstanding Public Debt as of 17 Sep 2008 at 08:09:07 PM GMT is: $ 9 , 6 4 1 , 4 3 9 , 8 6 4 , 1 8 1 . 5 3 and no one seems to be paying attention.
How will John McCain pay for the 45 new nuclear reactors he's proposing to the tune of $315 billion, with taxpayers bearing much of the financial risk?
McCain's proposed tax cuts, largely for the rich and big corporations, and financed with borrowed money, will cost at $3.3 trillion.
Get the facts on Obama's Comprehensive Tax Plan. If you have trouble finding it online, I would be happy to e-mail a summary via regular email. Just send me your outside email address.
Face it -- no matter who is elected, the president is going to have to work with Congress to make these plans a reality. The key here is the fundamental difference in their approach --
Please see factcheck.org -- or will you discredit that as a lib media also?
As a proudly Liberal Democrat, I have been in his camp all along. All McCain wants is to continue the status quo, and thats how we got where we are now.
I'm still wondering how all the stimulus was paid this year? that was a lot of money....and I know that I appreciated an unexpected $900 that got me through the summer when I was out of work.
Where's President Bush??? When a country sufferes a crisis, ussually whoever is President comes on the T.V. and tries, at least to quell the fears of the population, by explaining what is happening, and what plans are in the works. Past Presidents, from both parties used to do this. Where's Bush???
Roger, Pay attention to what Obama is saying. He's been explaining that he, just a few years ago, was warning about what is happening, right now, and no one would listen.
McCain, was supporting those who are a big part of this problem, and was voting against anything Obama was trying to put together to avert this very problem.
Roger Kiser - McCain did raise hell in 2005 about about Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac in 2005 - search for it. Obama did nothing but take campaign money from them. Look that up. You won't find that in any ad. Obama's ad here - a bunch of bull - he's acting as if all of America are victims. Victims of this housing and money crisis that HE was a part of. Victims that now WE have to pay for with our tax money to bail out some of these firms. Pretty talk Obama, but cut the bull. No way, no how. Go back to community organizing!
Obama encourages the listener to read his plan. He doesn't call the other side names -- he acknowledges, makes a couple statements, and suggests we find more. It's nice to hear an ad that is not a series of attacks.
Math was not my strong subject throughout school. But this is plain ole' addition and subtraction. All of Obama's promises will cost trillions of dollars over the long haul and seeing them through to fruition. There is not enough money in the Treasury to cover his promises.
The answer to who is going to pay for this $1,000 give away, the answer is, the same people who paid for the multi billion dollar give away to the rich and corporations during the Bush administration. Your and my grandchildren and great grand children! I disapprove of any tax cuts until we have enough to run our government, pay something on the national debt, and still have some left over. Then I'd like to see tax cuts but I object to them from either candidate at this time. If they are going to occur, it is time that Obama's chosen recipients benefited for a while!
People have developed the mind set that taxes are simply something that politicians use to manipulate the vote and such regulations as they see fit. The purpose of taxes is to fund the government! We should be looking at that feature exclusively for a while. The amount we spend annually on interest payments to service the national debt is shameful! We need to get it paid off and have that money to use where it is sorely needed.
Bush's deregulation of the financial markets, and his Fed edict that state watchdog agencies could not regulate the federal banks created the whole S**t sandwich, no denying that, conservatives. No oversight and unbridled greed was the end result, which of course ended in the sub prime mortgage debacle. Fannie Mae, and Freddie Mac did not fail in a vacuum, they succumbed to the same Bush policy that brought down Bear Sterns, Lehman Bros., AIG, etc. and will bring down a whole lot more. FM & FM may not have been perfect, but to try to claim things would have been different, or that Bush doesn't OWN this mess, is laughable. Kay, the ultra rich may pay 70%, but they also control 98% of the wealth, and the rest of us, what is it? 300 some million share the other 2%. Somehow, I think they can afford to endure Obama's tax plan, and not even notice, for the most part. Give me a break. This is hardly even approaching rates from the past that they managed to thrive with in the past hundred years.
He is so full of it.... and he only made generalized promises.
Let's examine a snippet:
Obama says "fast track a plan for energy made in America that will free us from dependence on Mideast oil in ten years."
So in other words, he is going to come up with a plan, but he doesn't have one now!
Energy made in America? What is that? We know it's not nuclear and it's not oil... so it must those green energies. Solar? Ok... I love solar, but it's not cost effective to consumers so it won't sell, it won't create jobs and it won't solve our energy problems. Besides, all those cars use oil, all those plastic products use oil... hell, there are so many things that use oil we simply can't rely on another resource for a long time... long past ten years.
"free us from dependence on Mideast oil in ten years"
Without drilling and without nuclear power, it's simply not going to happen.
Ok... so there, I've made a fair case that Obama is full of shit. Anybody care to offer a rebuttal?
Bush's? I thought we already went through this debate. Well, typical of you to start off with a false premise.... but I am sure the Obamanoids will buy right into it.
Republicans are so full of Shit... Don... You are so FULL of shit... You didn't go back to that Debate did you??? You LEFT it...
Phil Gramm, McCain's 'Money' Man Pushed that original Deregulation with the Help of his Lobbyist Buddies... Republicans were Distracting the Nation with that Blow Job show...
Bush NOT ONLY continued the De-Regulation Party... But FAILED to Watch the Results of the Deregulation... What sort of IDIOT Does THAT?!?!?!?
OH!!! But Wait!!! That sort of Deceit, Hokum, Lies, and Shim Sham is ALL The Republicans Have left at this point!!!
We really don't expect much other Behavior than that from them NOW...
Enough Republican SHIM SHAM!!!
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!
Go Sell your Bridge (to nowhere) Somewhere else... OH WAIT!!! The WHOLE World knows that the Republicans are Full of SHIT!!! Tough luck... Sorta did that to yourselves... Eh??? Go Sell YOURSELF a bridge, and then tell YOURSELF you Didn't WANT it!!! F#@$ing IDIOTS!!!
"Phil Gramm, McCain's 'Money' Man Pushed that original Deregulation"
You mean that bill in 1999 signed into law by Bill Clinton? Clue: that was not what caused the problem. The problem is that money was cheap and Fannie Mae was giving it out like candy.
Fast forward to Sept 2003 (before the housing bubble): New York Times....
The Bush administration today recommended the most significant regulatory overhaul in the housing finance industry since the savings and loan crisis a decade ago.
Under the plan, disclosed at a Congressional hearing today, a new agency would be created within the Treasury Department to assume supervision of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the government-sponsored companies that are the two largest players in the mortgage lending industry.
''The current regulator does not have the tools, or the mandate, to adequately regulate these enterprises,'' Mr. Oxley said at the hearing. ''We have seen in recent months that mismanagement and questionable accounting practices went largely unnoticed by the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight,'' the independent agency that now regulates the companies.
Significant details must still be worked out before Congress can approve a bill. Among the groups denouncing the proposal today were the National Association of Home Builders and Congressional Democrats who fear that tighter regulation of the companies could sharply reduce their commitment to financing low-income and affordable housing.
''These two entities -- Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac -- are not facing any kind of financial crisis,'' said Representative Barney Frank of Massachusetts, the ranking Democrat on the Financial Services Committee. ''The more people exaggerate these problems, the more pressure there is on these companies, the less we will see in terms of affordable housing.''
Representative Melvin L. Watt, Democrat of North Carolina, agreed.
''I don't see much other than a shell game going on here, moving something from one agency to another and in the process weakening the bargaining power of poorer families and their ability to get affordable housing,'' Mr. Watt said.

Check and mate. You're out of gas, moonbat... now go get your shinebox!
"Not that the GOP supporters with their head in the sand [among other places] will even give a listen to it."
I listened to it from YouTube, as well, it was played on Rush today. So given that most of us heard it, do you care to discuss my point on his dumb energy sound bite that I tore to pieces?
You moonbats think you know... but you don't know shit.
Don H., You forgot to include the fact tha Dodd and Obama were the top 2 recipients of campaign cash (both over $100K) from Freddie and Fannie. When McCain and many of the republicans tried to push through that 2003 bill, the dems fought it like crazy.
I support the drilling but I am not stupid enough to consider that the answer to our prayers. How much oil is available and at what cost is up to question. We do need a Manhattan type project to develop alternative energy sources and deploy them to the population. To drill and not pursue other sources is setting ourselves up for a massive problem down the line.
For one of any number of reasons, our source of oil from the Mideast could stop. If we are strictly relying on our drilling to solve the problems, we're in a world of hurt! The drilling should be thought of as a means to limit the amount of oil received from the Mideast. The supply of oil is limited throughout the world. We must find other energy sources. That is not a choice but a hard and clear fact. The when has so many variables that it is ridiculous. Therefore, we need to act as though it will be tomorrow. It is time to stop the six billion barrels of oil currently being exported and divert it to use in the USA!
All our efforts to make a democratic, US friendly, corporate friendly and stable is basically a pipe dream. Their culture will not permit such as nothing can overrule the church! The current problems in Afghanistan support and prove my contention.
To effect lasting change in one of these countries would require that we occupy the nation entirely, control the schooling of the young to insure they learn the value of life and respect for others. After 30 years of such training it would be possible to get that friendly, democratic nation. The cost of such an effort would be phenomenal and the lives lost and damaged would be colossal!
That Don, is the real situation in Iraq and Afghanistan. Much of our effort there is futile over the years. We need to abandon this notion that we need to rule the world. A Pax Americana will not work and endure in this age.
Still pushing that CYA bill that Bush didn't even support enough to get it out of a Republican Banking committee, Don? It's your party's party, this depression we're falling into, and Dems had very little to do with it. Lies and obfuscation are not going to change history. Your lousy economic policy has, though. Anyone that would vote for four more years of this irresponsibility deserves what they get, more of the McSame.
Pretty sure all these problems have been caused by the mortgage industry and the primary lender is Fannie Mae --- and the Dems fought for years going back to the Clinton years to let poor people get loans they can't afford.
We all know it was liberal policies that are at the root of the problems we are seeing today. Same old story.
They all sound good until they are sitting in that chair. Then something dark and uncaring reachs out and turns their head all the way around. It is the first time they see their ass and the last time they smile. sorry but there is no simple answer to this problem.
Isn't he part of Washington that's messed up? In fact, wasn't he one that pushed for those sub-prime mortgages for people who couldn't afford them? Yes he was. And when banks didn't want to participate in those sub-prime mortgages, he accused them of being racist. He's going to take away the tax gains everyone got under Bush - which increases your taxes - then he's going to decreas them a tiny bit. Giving $1,000? That has to come from somewhere. Oh yeah. He's going to steal from the rich to give to the poor. Like that's ever worked before.
\\\\..Tired of the lies, tired of the sham, tired of the scam... Wake up...////
That is the exact reason I'm voting for Obama! I thought Nixon was a liar but I hadn't seen anything yet. Sham and scam is an excellent description of what we have received from this administration.
Yes, go ahead and hang the blame on Obama! He, singlehandedly, removed the oversight from the process and forced those lenders into acting in an unreasonable manner! But he'll take the blame, he's got big shoulders.
In the years I was employed in a leadership position, assigning blame or taking the blame was something I had no real time for. I want solutions, not a fixing of the blame! When it is holding up the action needed I always say, give me the blame and get on with business!
Obama terrifies me! I have never been so afraid of a political candidate as I am of him.......I surely pray day and night for the RIGHT person to be elected. The Bible even has a lot of good verses about praying and making the "right" decision on who to vote for.....it's truly fascinating.
Mr. Evans, could you please watch your language on here? Some of us Christians do NOT appreciate all the "gutter" talk. It is NOT appreciated one bit. I do NOT allow that kind of filth in my house and don't really think it should be allowed on these boards, as well.

That Don, is the real situation in Iraq and Afghanistan. Much of our effort there is futile over the years. We need to abandon this notion that we need to rule the world. A Pax Americana will not work and endure in this age.

Well, most conservatives don't get polled because they're AT WORK! But don't worry, we always show up on the most important poll -- election day!
Then vote McCain.
Pretty sure all these problems have been caused by the mortgage industry and the primary lender is Fannie Mae --- and the Dems fought for years going back to the Clinton years to let poor people get loans they can't afford.
We all know it was liberal policies that are at the root of the problems we are seeing today. Same old story.
that the polls don't show
people 18-29
why, because they're smart enough to look at the caller ID
18-29 year old voters along with women and seniors

Wake up...////
That is the exact reason I'm voting for Obama! I thought Nixon was a liar but I hadn't seen anything yet. Sham and scam is an excellent description of what we have received from this administration.
Wonder no more, we borrowed the money from China to pay the "stimulus" payments.
