Do as I say or do as I do?

I grew up in a "do as I say, not as I do" type of home. I try to be a "do as I do" type of mom to my 12 year old daughter. I think we lead by example and if our kids see us doing the right things it will make it easier for them to do the right thing when time arises. So do you tell your children, do as I say, not as I do? Or do you tend to be more of a do as I do type parent?

I TRY my best to do as I want my kids to do! However, there are some things that they know mommy and daddy CAN do but they CAN'T do until they are grown-ups! I totally beleive that children learn my example!

I have no kids therefore I am an expert in child rearing! I would say you have to set an example with your parental behavior but there are always moments when an adult might be doing something a child shouldn't and those times are "do as I say" moments!

There are some times you do things that your kids can't. That happens.

We basically wing it. Usually, I say "See what we just did? Now, what did you learn from that?" and hope they get the message.

Because, believe me, they have no trouble filling in all the details about what we SHOULD have done instead.

My three are all adults now. I tried to set good examples and live how I wished they would. I must not have done too bad, as they are great adults.

It is best to show them what to do, not just tell them, My baby Daughter used to follow me around and try to do every thing that she saw me do. I was building a garage and she was there with a hammer try to help .She would always say when I get to be a Daddy I'm going to do this or that.

As my kids are all grown,my baby is 34 I did do the Do as I say!If you lead the children down the right path they will stay on track,but you have to be a parent first and then a friend.

Maybe I was wrong, but I never told my children when their father did something wrong. My daughter asked me once why I never told them about their father. I said, " He was your father." They had to respect him, no matter what he did.

I am not a parent, but try to teach my nieces to do as I do. It is important to talk to children about consequences so that they understand it when they get older. MY parents taught me to do as I was told but led by example too.

My husband is a "do as I say". Since he is a step-parent, I think it is harder for kids to respect that. It actually irritates me. I thnk parents and people in authority should "lead by example".
