The camera im using now is raked 36 last week and 37 this week its the Fuji S700 and can be found at walmarts for 197.00 so if your looking for a camera that has a lot of bang for a few bucks its a good buy. although it does need a little more knowledge about photography to get a decent shot than some of the panasonics at that price range. Im beginning to figure things out. It may not a begginers camera but a step inbetween then regular point and shot to the digital slrs.
But a panasonic will always be my first choice, cant wait for mine to get back from the shop. They are just not easy to find im my area most of the time so i went with the Fuji and was suprised at its quality.
this shot was taken with the digital zoom as far as it can go. pretty nice for a digital zoom not as grainie as a lot of them even my panasonic could not have produced this in digital zoom.

I'm quite happy with my older Sony DSC-F707 BUT I disagree with you about the 5 mega pixel thing. That is what mine has. I need something with more so I can enlarge my photos more than 8x10. Also my zoom is only 3x optical.
I know SLR is the way to go but with - what? a fixed lens? I could (with another camera) get 10x - 12x optical with out having to buy all the extra lenses. I also can get awesome macros on the camera I have.
I love the glass in the Sony's. I have a Carl Zeiss lens and the new lenses are also.
My camera is currently ranked #2 on the list ( Canon EOS Digital Rebel Xt)
Then I also have a Nikon Coolpix 2100 that is about 6yrs old that I LOVE and use all the time. In Jan I actually bought a used one of the same model off of Ebay for $25 because mine got broke.
