Do Your Kids Watch Too Much TV/

I was talking to my SIL yesterday and she mentioned that my nephew has started TV time - she puts him in his little chair and he watches a few hours of TV each day!  He is only 3 months old!  My 19 month old has just started to discover the tv.

I read an article here: http://www.webmd.com/parenting/news/20071001/too-much-tv-linked-behavior-problems?ecd=wnl_prg_100607 that says that more than 2 hours a day of television can harm your child's social skills.

According to the article, a study showed that children between the ages of 2.5 and 5.5 who watched more than 2 hours of televison were more likely to develop sleep, attention, and aggressive behavior problems than those who watched less.

How much tv do your kids watch?

I think TV watching should be limited by parents and grandparents too. It has gotten to be the favorite babysitter. Instead of learning to play and use their imigination, they just get fat and lazy and then the Mom,s want to blame McDonalds for the obesity, now who took that child there to get it. Yes I am old, but I cant remember many fat kids when I went to school. Theirs, was usually a medical problem too. They learn no life skills sitting in front of a TV, just that someone has to entertain them for the rest of their life.

We limit the amount of tv our kids watch. there are better things for them to do!

3 months is TOO young, my kids watch a lot of tv so I really can't talk but 3 months??? they need real interaction at that age!

I agree that *some* tv is educational - parents and caregivers must be diligent in monitoring what is being watched. I do think 3 months is a way too young - so many other activities for that age to explore & discover. Tummy time is great at that age. I limit my child to a few hours a day. Sometimes though if she is sick I'll let her watch movies all day.

I know that my son watches a little more thna what he should but almost everything he watches is in some way educational. I think it is really up to the parent to decide what is truly best for their child. I understand having your children watch tv so that you can do house chores... I do it too. At 3 months I beleive that my child may have watched TV too. It is just what caught his eye at the time.

I have never been an advocate for tv. I think there are much more interesting things for children to do. There are, however, some interesting programs for children now. I think everything in moderation is best.

Children under 2yrs should not watch TV, period. I don't think kids under 5 should be watching TV. If there is something educational that kids could get from TV I think the parent should be interacting with their child and teaching them whatever it is that the TV is showing...TV just allows parents to be lazy, and teaches kids that it is ok to sit in front of the TV and do nothing.

They used too. Then they broke the TV in their room and I refuse to buy them an new one. So, now they don't watch any!

My kids are 9 & 13. The 9 year old watches a few hours of football a week....not much else. I highly discourage tv in my house. THe teenager watches a few shows a week on the computer..

At around 6 months or so Maddie would watch a Baby Einstein video while in her exersaucer. This allowed me to take a shower.

Maddie watches NO commercial television.

When our kids were at home they were allowed to watch it one hour a day and that was it until they got to be a teen.
