Wiccans and Pagans: It is time to Step Of the Shadows And Make Your Vote Count

I posted a political piece on my page at a Wiccan and Pagan Networking site. The first comment was made by someone who didn't give a damn. Being politically and socially active isn't optional; it is a responsibility that we all share. After the past seven years of the whittling away of civil liberties, corporate greed, and government spying on the citizens of this country, we don't have the luxury of not giving a damn. Unless we are willing to get involved and hold our representatives responsible for their actions, they will continue to be public masters instead of public servants. In addition, the religious zealots will continue to be the only source of information about who we are and what we do. What each of us must ask ourselves is do you want the Pat Robertsons, the Pat Buchanans or an other right wing religious extremists disseminating information about us and our religious practices? Unless we step up to the podium and speak our truths that is all the society will know about us.
In the past seven years, the only people who are better off are those in the upper 10% economic bracket. They are the ones who received the big tax breaks. The oil, drug and insurance companies make record breaking profits on the backs of workers whose wages remained stagnant, while their benefits shrank. The cost of living has risen to the point that people are losing their homes. No matter how hard people work, they simple are unable to provide for their families. Soldiers who are returning home from an unnecessary war aren't being provided the necessary medical, emotional and physical care needed to heal from the damage done to them by extended and repeated tours. Civil liberties both on the local and national levels have been usurped in the name of national security when in most cases those involve have done nothing wrong outside of being different or unique. From law enforcement abusing their authority to telephone companies spying on the government's behavior, the rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are no longer guaranteed.
Recently the Livingston Parish Council in Louisiana tried to enforce the archaic fortunetelling ordinance. It was only after the Wiccan minister, Cliff Eakin, challenged the ordinance in federal court that the Parish Council decided to review their decision. Last Samhain, a witch being hung in effigy was considered a Halloween decoration, while empty nooses hung on a tree caused national controversy. At Yule, the city of Green Bay, WI opened it holiday display to other religions, yet the fair mindedness was short lived. The pentacle wreath was deliberately destroyed and was not allowed to be replaced, yet the nativity scene remained. In his State of the Union speech, Bush once again reaffirmed his commitment to the faith-based initiatives and support for religious schools at public expense; to date the only benefactors of those programs have been Christian.
Becoming political doesn't mean that you aren't spiritual. Protecting the environment, each other, and working towards peace is spirituality in action. It is walking the walk, instead of just talking the talk. Speaking out and being socially active does more than bring about positive change, it openly confronts the bigotry and misunderstandings that the small minds continue to spread. If all the public hears about how two girls were killed by a ritual gone bad or how a Wiccan couple lured teenage girls into their homes with sex and drugs, the stereotyping will only continue. The general public will never know the good we do in the world. If we don't step up and out of the broom closet. We don't have to march on city hall or protest in the streets to make a difference. However, if both as individuals or as groups, we openly volunteer for community service, become involved with charity events, run for political office or the many other socially positive options available, we will disprove the lies and build strong bridges. The more involved we become the clearly others will be able to se us for the people we are, instead of the lies that continue to be spread. Change will happen when we the people decide to make them happen. As long as we hid in the shadows, the world will not be able to see our light.

Theresa, Ron Paul is PERSONALLY pro-life. POLITICALLY he wants nothing to do with these decisions. He wants the States to control this issue. Not sure if it would be better that way but that's the way I understand Ron Paul's idea.
If the religious right was so concerned about children they would focus on birth control and education as a way of preventing abortion. It is has been proven that both are the only successful way to prevent unwanted pregnancies.
Secondly these so called child adocates are the one who shoot down health care for children, day care and all other social services that benefit children. If they truly wanted were pro-child there wouldn't be any unwanted children in the foster care system. When one became available there would be a line up to adopt.
Another woman came up with the right to life list. Anyone who was pro-life was put on a national list. Who was ever at the top of the list, not matter the health or life circumstance the right to lifer would be responsible for that child--not matter the health, gender or ethic back ground. If the person failed to provide that the child with a loving safe environment, they would be arrested for child abuse.
But the thing is most of these people would cry foul and refuse because they are all talk and no walk. They don't want to talke responsbility for the childeren or provide for them, yet they continue to stick their big noses in other people's business.
As far as buying a calendar with Pagan holidays on it: the Pagan holidays ARE on the regular calendars...they just don't call them by the same names. As I'm sure you know Imbolc = Groundhog day; Ostara = Spring Equinox; Beltaine = May Day; Litha = Summer Solstice;
So, how do you vote............or do you vote? For whom?
I thought St. Patrick rid the island of Ireland of snakes. I had no idea you guys considered yourself snakes. Didn't you just float over to the New World, only to be persecuted here also?
I have a question for you, if you don't mind answering.
Why do you call certain calendar events by strange, mythical, Middle Ages-sounding names rather than something like the more common usage, such as : "winter solstice"? Is this just a more emotional literary device, or what?
I was just curious why you chose a language not native to anyone in this country to describe something so simple. Its like using a 25 cent word to describe a nickel's worth of action.
Example : "somnambulistic" = "sleep walking"

Theresa -
Snakes were a metaphor for evil, no?
Do you consider yourself evil? Do you consider witches evil?
Thanks for the great answer on the holiday names. Still, if you're in America, and virtually everyone here speaks English, then why use an ancient language that virtually no one knows, to describe your holidays? I mean, don't you want to communicate in a way everyone understands? Why not just say "Halloween"?
So do you have any powers?
As for being progressive, Wicca, Pagan, and other Earth based religions were way ahead of everyone else when it comes to being energy responsible, alternative healing techniques/medicines and working for peace. Not only are we the keepers of history, but we are the ones who have been pushing for positive changes in the way we treat the planet and each other.
Powers? Like Charmed? No. I was born a natural intuitive and empalth. I have an affinity with animals and sometimes communicate with the dead, if that is what you mean.
If you speak Gaelic on a daily basis, I suppose that might work. But as I understand it, that's one of the most difficult and obscure languages on earth.
Yes, that's what I mean.
I was wondering what exactly made you a witch. If you don't have any powers, then it's all just product placement and branding, right?
Why don't you just tell us a bit about what you believe so that we can make snide little comments about that and feel superior as you are trying to do now? Oh, but wait, we wouldn't do that to you. You have the right to worship as you please.
And, Theresa, I apologize for becoming defensive, but I'm sorely tired of this guy's poking. If you want me to let it go, I will.
However, I was more interested in why you choose to self-identify, rather than just blend in and be inconspicuous. I'd think that with your history, you'd be afraid of the common man/woman. We haven't treated you well in the past, as you know.
I was just curious why you think like you do, since it's so foreign to me and probably to millions of other Americans.
Not that I'm endorsing Christian candidates here (I'm not), but you do realize that this country is roughly 90%+ Christian, right? With that kind of plurality against you, I think I'd rather stay underground and alive, rather than above ground and hunted. Just an observation..........
So many people do not understand us
Too many people exaggerate what we stand for
well done on bringing this to gather
