It has been over 80 years since the triumphant Siberian husky named Balto led his sled team
through -53 degree F temperatures to bring the much needed serum to the people of Nome, Alaska
staving off a dreaded diphtheria epidemic. This true tale has delighted both young and old since the
brave dogs made the serum run in 1925.
The statue commemorating this famous canine stands in Central Park in New York City. His brave trek across the Iditarod trail in near whiteout visibility drifts st
ill inspires visitors to his statue today. Sculptor Frederick Roth created the monument to Balto which was unveiled in December of 1925. To see the statue yourself travel north from the children's zoo. There you will find the plaque which bears the words "Endurance · Fidelity · Intelligence."
